2x velociraptor issues

Thread Starter
just finished my build, heres the specs: i7-950 3.7gig 12GB ddr3 gskill x58 sabertooth 2x GTS 450's in SLI 2x velociraptor 150GB HDD 1100W appevia PSU

so heres the issue, i hooked everything up, and mind you...i'm not a complete nerd i just know enough to think i know what i'm doing so my tech level is average at best...everything works great except these 2 hard drives, they are 10k RPM, gotem for faster gaming apposed to my 7200RPM i upgraded from, anyways in bios i see both drives, 1 is blank and 1 has my OS (i didnt know how to do raid...still tryin to figure that out) i put the OS on then configured them for raid and i guess it works...however, when in raid it doesnt boot windows unless i boot from hardrive 1, i'm assuming this is because OS isnt in raid 0 format between the 2 drives, makes sense...but then i get to windows and my computer only shows hardrive 1...the HD with my OS...no hardrive 2...but it shows up in bios and device manager...on windows index my 10,000 RPM hardrive is only scoring a 5.9, correct me if i'm wrong but isnt that the 7200 RPM rating?...what am i doing wrong here? never messed with/upgraded a HDD before

The raid array has to be created before you install the OS.

In bios, set the sata controller to raid, restart> ctrl+i> enter the matrix> set up raid.

yeah i pretty much figured that, any idea why i'm scoring only a 5.9 on windows index? i'm told this drive is supposed to score in the low-mid 7's by itself, how much preformance boost will i see in raid, i mean is it worth reformatting?

In Vista a 5.9 is the max score.

In W7 a 5.9 is the correct score for a single mechanical drive, I only get a 6.1 with a ss stripe.

W7 wei favors ssd's.

The 5.9 rating is correct, above that is reserved for SSD's. You need to create the raid0 in the raid bios before you install the OS - this wipes any data on the drives. Put it in raid mode, then CTRL+I during boot to get to raid bios, then create a new raid0, select the 2 raptors, set the stripe size, ect., Once you've created it you'll see it as 1 drive in the windows installer (but 2 in bios).

I tried a few when I had my 2 velociraptors in raid0, in the end I ran 32K for the OS in a 40Gig first volume and the rest at 128K for games/data. Windows likes small stripes and most other stuff likes large - I'd go 64k or 128k for 1 large volume with everything on it.

If you create the RAID in OS then its software RAID. Its better to RAID it from the BIOS level which is hardware RAID. I have run both Raptors and VelociRaptor and 5.9 is the best I've gotten.

ok, i appreciate the input, now...is the preformance difference worth the formating? i mean this is my gaming rig, i play SC2 and FFXIV and thats pretty much it aside from web browsing...currently i'm getting 130-175 framerate in SC2 and max 60 FPS in FFXIV, will i see a significant increase? if not i'll probably drop the 2nd raptor in my q9300 comp

I don't play either game but I wouldn't expect an increase in frame rate, maybe a decrease in load times.
