Guns in Video Games

Thread Starter
SO,

With the increasing realism portrayed in many video games (such as COD: BO and BFBC2) it seems the main focus of developers has been on integrating real weaponry in manners which largely resemble how each respective weapon works in a real life situation. My focus is not on realism in game play, but in the weaponry. Specifically, suppressors.

Sure it could be called the "Hollywood Effect", but very few guns make that iconic "laser" sound that is portrayed by every weapon with a suppressor. Regardless of caliber, everything sounds like a laser gun when you equip a suppressor does it not? Thats not realistic in any way. In fact, you need a subsonic round to achieve this. For reference, an emergency siren on an ambulance is rated at 80db. A suppressed .45 handgun is around 140db. A suppressed 9mm is around 120db. A suppressed .22 (the first subsonic round listed here) is around 60db. As you can see the only "laser" gun esque round here is the .22... Larger calibers, such as the common .308 in a sniper rifle, 12gauge shotgun, 7.62mm assualt rifles and 5.64mm assault rifles will ALL BE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER in db ratings.

How does a suppressor work you might ask? By channeling ignition gases away from the bullet as it leaves the barrel. There are a few types of suppressors out there, but all work in essentially the same manner. Suppressors DO NOTHING for the sonic "boom" emitted by a round.

So what is the point of a suppressor in real life? Well the department of health has defined the ceiling for safe indoor noise levels at 140db. Suppressors are only intended to prevent blowing your eardrums out indoors. Period, game over, done.

Also, there is no such thing as a SILNECER. That implys there is no sound emitted. Suppressors do exist and is the proper terminology

So what do you guys think? Do you like the idea of creating almost a real world in which a game can be played? I firmly believe a game will never be played like a real life scenario, but developers have been moving towards "shoot this virtual ak-47, its exactly the same as the real one" etc.

I for one like the idea. But I believe "attachments" should be as realistic as well...

Also suppressors often increase range / terminal velocity of sniper rifles. Nope in-game they reduce range and damage... wut?

Also the games seem to be basing realism off of movies, huge explosions etc, so if guns in Hollywood make a soft pewpewpew with silencers then guns in the game will too.

Well the suppressor is meant to lower the light emitted from the weapon as well as eliminating the position of the shooter from the targets perspective.
The bullet is make the most noise when you are hit from a distance.
But without a suppressor you hear the guns bang right after the bullet passes and reveals the shooters position.

Meh I think you are referring to muzzlebreaks.

Suppressors rub the gases off the round as it passes (channeling them)

Probably because silnecer isn't a word...

In any case I started playing arma 2 lately which is much better than BO and BC2.

I don't know why you would even think BO has realistic weapons in the first place, because it doesn't. BC2 has bullet drop and that's about it but we have had that for a long time these games don't really introduce anything new.

Play arma 2 if you want a true mil-sim game. These other games are just FPS and can't be taken seriously.

Here is a video of some guy using a .50 cal sniper rifle (note the top right he is adjusting his range to make the shot) :

Edit : Here are some of my screenshots from arma2, stuff you can't really do in those other fps games :

Though I liked the echo sound of the weapon when you shot.
BANG! .............ka-bang...

you know, like in the movie tremors when they shot from the bunker place and they others hear the echo sound from it.

I just fired up MGS4 and see how the suppressors sound in that game.

Haha nice but you seem to be missing literally every point you try to discredit...

Note that I said not to use the term "silencer"
The realism to which I refer, if you would refer to my OP, is in the actual item not in its use. I never said BO was realistic in any way, in fact just the opposite is true. ARMA2 looks cool though

As for bullet drop? UH I play bfbc2, usually as recon. having 2000+ kills with the m95 at 71% accuracy... I think I know bullet drop and lead pretty well.

i find a balance of the 2 realism and fun make for great games. I do love my old school games like rainbow six that went the realism route.

bc2 doesnt try for realism, they try for fun, or what is called tactical. real guns dont have a cone of accuracy that gets bigger every bullet you fire.
