i7 950 overclocking problems! please help

Hi,

First off i'd just like to thank everyone who writes on this site. It has been very helpful thus far for a noob like me! However, i'm having troubles getting to 4Ghz. I'm quite surprised by this as everyone seems to be saying how easy it is to get a 4ghz overclock with an i7 950. . I have managed to run prime95 (2 hour test) stable @ 3.795Ghz but i really want to push for 4! I have tried increasing the FSB to 175 with a 23 multi to get to it...managing to boot windows at 1.3v but failing the intel burn test and getting blue screen in under a minute. If i raise the vcore further i cant boot windows?! I was thinking it might be the RAM as stock frequency is 1600Mhz and i was trying 1700+. I dialed down the RAM to 1403Mhz but it still wont boot. I'll post my current settings for 3795Mhz below If you have any suggestions as to what i might be able to change to get a stable OC at 4Ghz it would be much appreciated. If i have missed something blindingly obvious or if i have posted this in the wrong place, i apologize in advance.

Try giving your uncore voltage a little boost.

Then kill your QPI link rate, don't put it on "slowest" but put it on the lowest actual speed.

I would also ditch the RAM for the moment down to 1.4 and focus on getting a stable boot before ironing out the details.

Yeah vcore and qpi/dram voltage is pretty low. I have been breaking ground and 1.25 and 1.3 respectively and worked from there. If you're stable but hot, trim...

Like buddy said above, cut ram out by dropping it sub stock. That'll help point a finger at why you crash! I'm not sure if I'd kill the voltage- it's designed for 1.65- but kill the frequency. Drop it to 1400 or whatever and then you don't need to worry about it.

Also. Lock in that qpi link data rate. Shouldn't be any more than 36x your bclock. Usually that number will be one of the options.

Right, I've spent the evening overclocking, pushing up the qpi and the vcore a little bit at a time. Ive got to 3999.62 MHz with a 174 bclk and a x 23 multi (so close but so far!). Loosening the RAM timings and clocking it down helped loads, as did locking in the qpi link data rate! Thanks very much for that advice! I've had it stable on IBT with gflops at an average of 46 with Hyper Threading on. Is that normal? I am also doing a Prime95 test as i write, 40 mins passed with no issues other than rather high temps...max: 86, 81, 81 and 79 degrees Celsius on the cores so far (Pretty scary stuff). I cant decide whether to clock back or leave it as i understand that it is unlikely i will ever be at 100% load in real world use. For some reason, even though i set the bclk to 174 it is only running at 173.9...why is this? With 174 i should be reaching 4002Mhz but its not showing up! If i put the bclk up to 175 then i cant post, i have tried increasing the vcore and qpi to compensate for the lack of a post but to no avail so far (I have taken them up to nearly the max voltage for the chip). I'm wondering if i should even bother seeing as the temps are getting a bit out of hand. Do you think i've reached the limit of the cpu or is there some way i can sort this out and reach the almighty 4Ghz mark? Again i'm trying all these test with HT on. I'll post my BIOS settings again below for you to have a bit of a mull over. Should I be looking at changing the Cpu and IOH Skew settings to get it up to 4ghz? a note in the BIOS seems to indicate that changing this will alter the bclk overclocking ability. What would you guys suggest?

I just clocked over to 4.2 on my 920 and needed about 1.37 vcore to fold without crashing. I've seen some guys say they can get to 4 on 1.33 but anyone can say anything. For 4 I'm going to put a substantial percentage of my next pay cheque on the fact that you're going to need at least 1.35 vcore. Qpi/dram will be about that as well- maybe more if you start messing with timings. Leave those on whatever they want to do for now and then once your CPU clock is stable you can go after them.

Ooops... I missed the part where you said you took it to nearly max voltage. I'm going to scratch my head over that one for a moment and I'll add more when I get my head around it! All I can think of is that if you're not bumping of QPI / DRAM then that's your weak link. 1.35 minimum on QPI Dram and don't be surprised if you go beyond slightly.

Also, TM function and Execute disable bit should be disabled. Also, some differential amplitude can help make the chip less prone to "noise." 800 is a good start. If we get to the end of the road and still have instability we can try 900- but 1000 generally causes too much of its own "noise" and is generally not recommended from what I've read / experienced.

Getting any bsod codes? 101, 124 are common. Can't remember the third one that has to do with ram timings.

Your temps aren't bad at all so no fear!

I've been pushing the voltage and qpi in equal measures for about an hour (vcore up to 1.4v and qpi/dram up to the same) and still can't post! so weird. It just seems like it's hit a wall. I'll get rid of execute disable bit and tm function, change the amplitude and see what it comes up with! Any ideas about why my 174 bclk is only showing 173.9 in cpu-z? i've googled it and cant find anything.

I think you've hit what they call a bclock "hole."

What I'll suggest is bringing your multiplier back for now and bumping up your bclock to 180 and starting again from about 1.33. I think 21x180 or so might work. Word on the street is that the chip likes odd multipliers... I'm not sure if I've ever seen proof but let's run with that for now (I do too )

If you're still in a hole, go up to 185 and drop your multiplier a little. Again... 1.33-1.35 vcore should be sufficient to at LEAST post. 1.35 QPI should be a good launch point as well.

As for the slightly different bclock I wouldn't worry about that too much. There can be some slight deviation between windows programs and the bios.

I can't remember if you'd flashed the bios to the most current either- sometimes it does add some stability if it isn't in fact the monitoring software to blame.

To be honest, we should be pulling your multiplier right out of the equation as well- and testing for maximum bclock... But we're SO close I'm going to go against the grain and just push you through as is.
