Need some help with AM2+

Thread Starter
I have no where else to go but to turn to OCN for some help. I have a very old motherboard (MCP61PM-GM) and right now I have an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4400 2.3GHz. Here is my CPU specs according to CPU-Z

As you can see, my CPU socket type is AM2 and according to Newegg, they only have 1 CPU that's AM2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103717) and I don't think it's powerful enough to run my games.

Can I use AM2+ socket for my motherboard? I can't even overclock my CPU because my BIOS does not give that option. I don't have money right now to buy a new motherboard. :'(

Just spend the cash upgrade your mobo ram and cpu to am3 and be set. Bulldozer is about to come out.

Otherwise its up to your board whether you can use a am2+ chip. BTW that upgrade wouldnt be too expensive and you would see some very strong real world gains.

yes they are backwards compatible and when you do switch make sure to update your motherboards bios beforehand to guarantee compatibility

dude.. he said he didn't have money to upgrade his board, why are you suggesting to upgrade everything pretty well?

It can use an AM2+ processor if there is a BIOS update for that motherboard. Can you press the tab in CPU-Z that shows the motherboard model #? I can look it up and tell you if you are out of luck. If it works, I still have one AM2+ for trade/sale, a 7750 x2 Black Edition 2.7 GHZ 2mb L3 cache.

did u fail to see the part where I said its possible if the bios allows? I gave him my opinion then the answer to the original question. I guess I could have flipped it but I assume hes a big boy and will read the entire response I gave him

OP: you are screwed. Your motherboard is an OEM locked mobo made by ECS but not supported with any BIOS updates by ECS or Gateway. You are stuck with AM2 processors of 89W or less. If I was you, I would look on these forums for a cheap used motherboard with an unlocked BIOS. In your case, since you have DDR2 memory already, try to find an AM2+ motherboard. They support AM2/AM2+/AM3 processors. I bet you can find a good used one for $30, since new ones aren't much more.

don't get that proc u linked, it would be a real downgrade. most mobo's with a bios update will let you use am2+ in a am2 mobo, just look on the manufactures website for a bios update and see if it alows am2+ chips with it.

for some reason this person has the same motherboard as you but is able to use a Phenom 9500.

I was able to flash a Sony BIOS to the Intel one and I got more options so it is possible to do that. look around for a non OEM bios for that board from ECS
