Ivy Bridge and whatnot

I'm seeing a lot of posts touting Ivy Bridge as the successor to LGA-1366. I'm curious, did that come from actual insider information or just conjecture?

The way I see it:
  1. We don't know if Intel will be releasing high-end Sandy Bridge. For all we know, they could be releasing a 32nm Sandy Bridge successor to Bloomfield later on in the year. It could be just like Bloomfield and Lynnfield except this time, mainstream is getting released first and enthusiast comes later.
  2. We don't know if they'll be releasing a full line-up of chips for Ivy Bridge. Nehalem/Westmere was kinda off, but it's possible that Intel might do the same as they did with Core 2 65nm > Core 2 45nm.

If anyone here has any articles that may be able to clarify the state of affairs in Intel CPU land, please feel free to post links.

Intel always releases a bigger faster chip 6 months or a year later.It is inevitable.

Don't fool your self into thinking sandy bridge/1155 is going to last.

How do you explain Westmere? What happens if Ivy Bridge ends up a flop like it?

Actually, I do believe LGA-1155 will have greater longevity compared to LGA-1156. From early roadmaps, LGA-1156 seemed to be nothing more than a transitional socket. Even back when Lynnfield was released, we already know that LGA-1155 was replacing it. Given Intel will be releasing LGA-1155 Celerons, I have a feeling it'll last for a while even if it's only to serve the low-end market.

That said, yes, I know something better is just around the corner. I'm just questioning the assumption that Bloomfield's replacement will automatically be on Ivy Bridge. Unless there are people here who are sitting on some insider information, the fact of the matter is we don't know what Intel's planning. Add to that, we also don't know how Bulldozer (Zambezi) will perform. Sandy Bridge is almost here and thanks to a number of articles, we know more or less how it's going perform. Ivy Bridge and Bulldozer? Still a big question mark.

Ivy Bridge will be a die shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture, and it will maintain LGA 1155 compatibility as well as LGA 2011.

Think of it like the transition from Core 2 65nm to Core 2 45nm.

I think we will see 4 core CPUs based on Ivy Bridge on LGA 1155, and 6-8 cores on LGA 2011.

In any case, Ivy Bridge will cater to both platforms. Perhaps we might even see a 6-core CPU for LGA 1155. But if not, it will at least have 22nm CPUs.
