The best way to apply thermal paste?

What is the optimum way to apply thermal paste scientifically I.e proven to give more cooling results? And how much paste too?

There's no real template. Different processors need different applications. Lapped? Not lapped? What kind of paste? There are lines, crosses, finger spread, not spread. Beads, application on heatsink- like with direct heatpipe style (212+) etc

Sorry man- need to be more specific.

not another one of these threads... do a search there must be like 100 different discussions on this at OCN. But you'll find the answer is going to be the same as which is better, Ford or GMH

Typical application of TiM is placing a pea sized dot in the middle of the CPU

I seen an article not to long ago where they tested several methods to determine the best one used, trying to find it now.

Edit : Found it

Well i thought i have seen people do it wrong before...this is not baking a cake style...you dont make designs or crosses...

i thought the most accurate way is to either...put a pea shaped size right in the middle of the heatsink.... or to use a creditcard/device and spread an even layer across the heatsink...

Well thanks for the replies and ty for that link if you can find it Sharp.

But just wanted to know if there is any differences in terms of cooling affects and temps.

For me it will be AS5 on a non lapped CPU on a zalman cnps9500

Thanks. It's a shame it doesn't have temps after each method in there though.

I've always just put a small pea of it on the CPU itself, then mounted the heatsink correctly on it. Never had any problems.

You are looking at less than 1-2C difference in reality between methods (spreading/blobbing or whatever), if that. Unless you mount the heatsink/block badly/incorrectly.

Don't worry about it too much.
