Windows 7 Startbar Resets Settings Itself

Thread Starter
I have two problems of the same situation. It happens on both my laptop (using pre-installed OS from Alienware) and my main rig.

The first is Notification Area settings don't stay and reset back to default. This is especially true with Steam, which is running 70% of the time my computers are on. It magically goes back to being show icon on notifications only.

The second is the Windows Explorer tab won't keep my pinned directories for long.

My laptop never crashes unless the safety shut down for low battery is nothing more than a "Hey, gonna crash for a sec. Brb, lol.".

Anyone know of a fix?

EDIT: I have googled this and have not found a fix. PC is clean and OS is legit.

I'm using a legit copy of windows and no malware pops up in avira or malwarebytes.

The tuts in the following link do not work.

looking at your sig, you sure you didn't pirate windows?

if you look on newegg, you can get win7 64 bit professional for $130.

it's a good idea to run legitimate windows--less problems with microsoft and you get security updates.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Windows XP?

At any rate this happens with both my laptop and desktop. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium x64 which came with my *laptop*.

Found a hotfix for my situation, except I have auto log in off, but M$ would like me to pay to talk to someone to download it?

interesting,
is there a program that you've installed on both your computers?
maybe it changed some registry settings?

you can try a registry cleaner and see if that does anything helpful.
(don't forget to create a restore point beforehand)

I don't have any unusual programs installed on both computers. The most unusual thing on my taskbar is Eclipse, but it's not on my desktop at all. I'm going to do this on another laptop and restart it a few times to see.

It may also be worth noting that my laptop is a newer build version than my desktop.

look for any third party applications that are installed on both your computers. even if they are not unusual. that's the only thing i can think of, since both machines exhibit the same problem.

I highly doubt it's a program that is doing it. I would think UAC would keep programs from modifying OS files...
