Budget card

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I'm looking for a budget card around the £100 mark. I've reciently been having lagging spots with games such as F1 2010 and MW2 (which was set to highest on everything).

I know I need a more serious upgrade than just the GPU but money is the issue atm. I also want to wait for bulldozer and intel's 2011 sometime in 2011 so the only thing for upgrade right now is my faithful 8800 (which i'm surprised is still going strong).

So is it worth buying... say a 460 768mb?
How much bottleneck can I expect?
What sort of performance gains can I expect?

System specs below:
E6600 OC 3.2GHZ
gaming on a 1920x1080 monitor

Any input greatly appreciated

I think the gtx 460 is a good purchase for you. There should be some bottleneck, but I think the performance gain should outweigh that. To my knowledge a gtx 460 is 2-3x faster so depending on what settings you use, you should expect significant gains

Your probably gonna need the 1GB edition for your resolution of 1080p ?

According to your sig rig.

The 1GB will aid the card at performing better at that resolution

I would suggest the 460 or the 450 I'm sure there will be some bottleneck for the 460 not really sure for the 450. I had a 460 1gb with my e8400 I felt that it was even bottlenecking my 460 but I'm sure that was only because I was play BFBC2 which uses alot of cpu power. But you would just get a 460 who cares if it bottlenecks a little still going to preform really well and you can always upgrade your rig which then your 460 won't have any bottleneck

If you want to buy new, the GTX460 1GB is the clear choice, you could probably even get away with the 768MB version whilst still getting good performance.

If you don't mind buying used, I'm currently selling an unlocked GTX465, so a 470 for £125. See the link in my sig for more info. Now that'sgood bang:buck ratio.

^^ I would highly recommend going with the 1GB 460 over the 768, especially since you are playing games on 1080p resolution.

No seriously if i needed a card atm I would be all over this.

Yes the 470 will be bottlenecked by your CPU but it will give an absolutley huge performance increase over your current card and even a 460!

If you're going for a 460 get a 1gb. At 1080p resolution it'll be better for you

The performance disparity isn't that large and I would say the choice really comes down to price. I had a 768 for a while and it handled everything except for metro on highest presets with no AA (I don't think the 1gb), a 1gb card would have made a difference but not earth shattering.
