Gigabyte mobo doesn't like Nvidia cards...

Thread Starter
Hey guys, hoping you can help...

I have been running a Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD4 board for about a year. I wasn't happy with my ATI 5770 and it's driver issues, so I went out and bought a GTS250. Plugged it in and got graphics error beeps at POST. Tried it in a different machine and the card worked fine. Just for kicks I plugged it into the secondary PCI x16 (actually x8) slot and it worked fine. Put the 5770 back in, no problems. Tried a different power supply, no change. So this has to be a problem with the mobo, correct?

So I sent it back to GB to be fixed, after exchanging all the problems and info with their techs via their pre-RMA troubleshooting process. Just got it back today, and it has the same problem! Of course they did not include any info on what they found or fixed, if anything.

Summary of what cards I have and what works and doesn't:
Works:
5770 and 4350
Doesn't work:
GTS250, GTX460, GT240

Any ideas on what might be going on?

I have a feeling this board is destined for HTPC use with an ATI card

Assuming you have plugged in the extra molex, have you tried bios updating?

Driver issues? Did you clean out the ATi drivers?

I have not tried updating the bios - perhaps that should be my next step. Yes, I have plugged the power connectors in I suppose we all forget the basic/obvious at times.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it shouldn't be driver issues if the system isn't making it past the POST test with graphics power errors.

Updating the BIOS did not help. I'm fairly sure when I sent it out it was running version F8 bios, and it came back F11 (which is current - looks like they did do something to it other than repackage it and send it back).

Also can't get audio out through the HDMI on the 4350 now

Thanks for any help!

How the heck can the 5770 work and the 250 doesn't?This is a good one.I would consider trying again.Did you do a cmos reset when you switched the cards?Maybe the psu only likes ati?

It is baffling...

CMOS has been reset, 3 different PSU's have been tried, 2 different cases, 2 different set of memory, different fans and combinations...

Another new development: main x16 slot has no audio over HDMI with the 4350. Swap the 4350 over to the secondary x16(x8) slot and it works perfectly.

Any other ideas/solutions are welcome - I'm all out of ideas.

Picked up PCIe tuner today and tossed it in the 'bad' slot - it works, so I guess I'll just leave it as is unless anyone else has any ideas... Not sure what to do with it - if GB can't/won't fix it, I can't legitimately sell it for anything more than peanuts (and any replacement board would require another Win7 activation), and I don't have a better home for the i5-750 it's using since I've discovered the inexpensive awesomeness of AMD boards & CPUs.

Current config:
PCI x16: x1 tuner card
PCI x4: blank
PCI X16(x8): HD4350
PCI: blank

Video performance seems to be good enough for TV, movies and video, this computer won't see any gaming, so I'm not sure if I'll ever need the bandwidth of x16...
