I'm starting to think dual GTX 460s/470s might be the best bet. But the choices are daunting:

Before you realize it later, I'll tell you now. You're gonna run out of memory.

Meh, you can run out of VRAM with only 1 monitor @1080 resulting in reduced framerates. It is a given with many-monitor that you'll need to cut AA drastically to keep playable framerates regardless of what GPU you have.

but the problem with the nvidia cards is that you have to have 3 identical monitors or it wont work.
my best friend has the 5870 2gb cards and did 3 monitors setup
he told me you can use 3 different monitors but it has to run on the same resolution.
if you have $400 to spend I would go with a 5870 2gb card and you should be good to go

hrm, something to consider, but I will definitely be using three identical displays.

THREE!? I know a lot of gmers on this board do 3x and 4x SLI, but I'm having a hard enough time just using two...and always thought of myself as a one-card guy just because of the expense, power requirements, and hassle of multiple cards.

Something to consider though i suppose. God help me. smile.gif

i just purchased 2 gtx 460 (768mb) and i love them... running them in surround .... when you mention 3 monitors you do mean in surround or eyefinity correct? with a slight oc to 800 and 2027 on the mem they really do great on three 22" 1080p monitors, total 5760x1080... im in love both of the cards are GALAXY and with MIR, not a bad deal at all.

yep, probably did need to hear it. I think I've got unrealistic expectations of what I can get on three 1080P displays with my current budget.

So it would take three decent cards to get 1080P 4xAA high quality settings on three displays I assume.

For the record, gaming on this rig will be mostly limited to Scifi MMO's 99% of the time. I use an xbox for FPS these days, so just planning on using the desktop for things like EVE, SWTOR, etc. and then of course heavy photoshop work and some autoCAD.

(sigh) can't believe I wasn't even considering more than one card a week ago and now I'm entertaining the idea of three, lol. maybe I need to come back down to earth, lol. Just got obsessed with the triple display idea...and can;t shake it!

dam I forgot that Ati came out with the 6970 with 2gb.
I would get that ATI 6970 if you want to run 1 card
but if you go with Nvidia 470 gxt is the minimum i would do

I was under the impression that the 460s were a better deal and could be OC'd to 470 levels easily. Also, might be able to do three 460s within budget if I play my cards right and wait a month or two...

So the only drawback will be I will need a better Mobo and PSU to handle the power requirements of three cards.

Definitely going LED on the displays if i do that, lol. Crikey, my budget keeps creeping up. frown.gif
