PNY good brand? - Page 3

I have a refurbished PNY GTX 470 that I bought on Newegg about two months ago...it's still going strong, and I've been able to watercool it and push its overclock like crazy.
I believe that pny is the only company that produces nvidia's high end quadro workstation cards. Mine gets a rest every now and then when i actually do cad work, otherwise it's churning out 6600 ppd folding.

Let me Share my experience with PNY.

I'm not really going to call them a bad company 'per say', but I have had my fair share of problems with them.

I purchase their 8800GT GT around spring of 2008.. and it has ran perfectly fine for about a year and a half. After that, I noticed the card's idle/load temperature was slightly more than what it use to be. I took the card out, cleaned all the dust from the fan and outer edges... put the card back in and I got artifacts all over the screen.

It's a joke, right? Well... I called PNY 5 times that day and the representative kept trying to transfer my call to the right department. It took forever to get an RMA because their telephone service/support was semi-terrible. It wasn't really bad or anything, but I called during regular business hours, I should not have to wait and listen to your automatic answer machine 4 times in order to get a hold of someone competent to help me out with my problem.

The shipping time was pretty good. They sent me the card back within 1 week after they received the card that i sent them. They sent me a refurbished 8800GT replacement, but guess what? 45 min inside my computer and the fan was making some creaking noises. I took it out and the fan blades felt so cheap and one of them was starting to crack and you could tell all of the others were bound to do the same thing.

It's complete anarchy because then i had to spend anohter few days and looking around sites with aftermarket coolers that still support the 8800GT. I managed to get the Accelero S2 or something like that for around $14, so i guess it wasn't such a big loss, but seriously, couldn't they have tested and double check the refurbished versions before shipping them out?

I'm tired of these lazy a## companies who don't care at all about quality and just find workarounds to save each and every penny they can harvest. So basically, PNY isn't all that bad, but they really need to work on their management and customer satisfaction. I'll certainly be looking to go with another brand like EVGA in the near future.

I believe there really are no "good companies" anymore when it comes to these things. I've heard horror stories about brands from EVGA to Gigabyte, MSI to PNY, etc, etc, etc...

I guess you have to go in these days with the mentality of "take a chance, hope it works." If that item doesn't work, you have to RMA, which is getting to be as bad as mail-in rebates. Sometimes, you send it in and have to wait forever to get it back or that you send it in and nothing gets done. Some cases, they (the company) argue the condition of the unit and even complicates things more. More delays ensue.

As for me, I've never had a problem with MSI products or their service. They even helped me out answering some questions I had a while back about a motherboard I have. Of course, I have heard and read about the negatives about their RMAs and quality. I can't say anything for PNY, but again, it's all "take a chance" and see if you have a good card you will never have to worry about (I have a PNY 9800GTX+). I too am looking into getting a 570 from either PNY, MSI or ZOTAC.

In the end, I just choose the cheapest card with the "better" reputation and/or different/unique features, even though it's still a chance at best.

Sorry about the long post, I'm sure no one cares. I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Great Advice. Thanks.

Keep in mind that they employ people to work in in their RMA department and i bet 100% sure there are at least few dozen of employee hates their job and doesn't give a damn about your RMA process. And the few that ran into these horror stories felt their wrath. I don't think you would be happy working for like 16 an hour 40 hours a week at age w.e they are assume(25+)

I've had three PNY cards over the last ten years or so. All of them still work so I keep them as back ups for my old rig. Get an aftermarket cooler tho. At the very least, as someone else mentioned, break out the AS5.

It is kind of 'luck of the draw' sometimes. Two ASUS cards I had were POS. Doesn't mean ASUS is a bad brand. I swear by their MoBos.
