the 5870 has better performance than the 6850

and upgrading cpu to at least a quad core would be nice as well

there's a huge power gain between the 450 and 5870

Quadcore first then graphics. You'll notice the quad core performance much more.

Cool. Well with my current board I did unlock the Phenom. But due to a sata drive screwing around with my boot (i forgot to format) I reset the bios like an idiot. I can go back in and unlock those extra cores. I have yet to stress test tho. I just got the new stuff running the way I want it pretty much.

If all goes well with the stress testing I'll stick with it being unlocked. If not I'll call it a loss and upgrade to a Phenom 955. But it is great to know that the graphics card upgrade will be worthwhile.

Hi, if you call it a loss, you might as well get a 1055T, if your motherboard supports it. for the latest AMD cards, AMD have moved the naming system up, so a ;
6870=5770
6970=5870
6990= 5970
My opinion is, if your board unlocks to a 3 or a 4 core, your SET, grab a 6870 (5850-5870 speeds, will give you almost 2x the FPS). if it doesnt unlock, grab your self a 6870 anyway, or a 1055T if your board supports it and you really want 4 cores. there isn't really anything wrong with a dual core, you will only get more FPS in games that support more than 2, and more than likely your board supports 3 cores, and that is enough.

Then grab a 1055T and a nice cooler and overclock! Go grab a new GPU later, your GTS450 is fine for the time being
post #9 of 10
If it just for gaming, Phenom II X6 does not perform better than Phenom II X4.
You can simply get Phenom II X4 955 and overclock it.
Phenom II X6 1055T won't perform better in game because most game does not take advantage from the extra cores.
faster clock speed 4 cores is better than slower clock speed 6 cores in game.

Radeon HD 5870 is good but its life won't be long. Why don't you get Radeon 6950 instead? It will perform like GTS 450 in SLI.

Phenom II X4 955 + Radeon HD 6950 is better than Phenom II X6 1055T with Radeon HD 5870.
