Still agonising over this one myself. If I was still gaming at 1920x1200, I reckon I would have gone with the 570 by now due to its price point and good overclocking potential. This is coming from someone who has had ATI cards for the last 3 years (and zero driver issues).

However, i'm now gaming at 2560x1440 and things are a lot less clear. The 2GB vram on the 6970 is good for the higher res but I'm now leaning towards the brute force of the 580. I'm really not sure which way to go on this one. And will it even be a decent upgrade to my 4890s ? Decisions decisions.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make my own mind up on this one. A think a good deal on a 580 will sway me back to the green side though.

If 10% on average is really worth $160 to you then by all means.

Unlocking a 6950 pushes this to a $240 or so difference...

I might have gotten a pair of gtx570s if they weren't limited in memory. Eyefinity is on the way! I'd have it up and running had Dell not sent me a bum lcd, grrr.

I used to love Nvidia but the price point of AMD is just too hard to resist and make me wonder why people go for Nvidia cards. Most people who rant about poor AMD drivers (myself included when I had a 5970) are due to tweaks and mods that made the drivers act weird. If you use driver sweep and install a clean version of AMD's drivers they are absolutely great. I admit I had lots of headaches when AMD cards get stuck at 2D clocks and I have no clue what's causing it, but once I figure it out it's Adobe Flash I just gotta close it and everything's fixed.

With AMD drivers you gotta do a bit of test and trial to get everything working, but owning AMD cards for a year now I can say the bang for buck far outweights the small troubles (i.e crossfire profile not working, 2d clocks, etc)

Also 75% of the nVidia cards I have owned in the past have died, whereas none of the ATi ones have

Not even going to consider a 580 when based on the techpowerup review overall at 1920x1200 there's only a 13% lead over the 6970. Certainly not enough performance to justify nearly $240 in cost over an unlockable 6950. You could almost crossfire for that amount..
Where is that 6950 for 279.99 FS? If it is a place where I don't pay taxes I'm so buying it... well depends on brand.

It was newegg. There was a MIR on the gigabyte one for $20 a couple days ago and they didn't charge shipping. Not sure if the MIR is still good, might have to search for it.

as much as I love newegg I don't like CA taxes... that's $23+ dollars there.

I might Jump to Tigerdirect for their 309.99 cards with 6% cash back from the add it up program. No taxes there for me.
