Thread Starter
Anyone have any experience with the i7 970? I haven't seen many posts about them and was curious, especially since I just got a good deal on one!

My i7 950 will be hitting the marketplace in a few days!!

4.2Ghz is almost a given. They are great chips. I am running the same board as you and had no issue getting 4.2Ghz in about 5 minutes. I adjusted the following voltages:

CPU Vcore - 1.35v
CPU PLL - 1.42v (down from default 1.8v)
CPU VTT - 1.32v
Ram - 1.6v

Everything else is on auto. Multi set to 21x and BCKL at 200Mhz. Ram is at 1600Mhz for those settings.

I personally feel they oc better than the 980x well intill you get into the DICE/LN2 stages.

I am loving mine so far. Ambient temps in my room right now have been ~66-67F, and with my simple Zalman heatsink/arctic silver, my temps hover around 30-33C on idle/web browsing and I haven't seen anything above 44-45C in gaming. (with fan at about ~1200rpm, man I love 32nm tech!)

I have only had my system up and running for a few weeks, and it is running great. So now I will move forward with OCing.. however I haven't OC'd since my last processor. (it was a core2duo... so this will be a whole new world)

Has anyone else with this CPU OC'd with the ASUS Sabertooth X58 mobo? I am looking to get around 4.0-4.2. I am confident with my temps, however I can pump up my Zalman rpm if needed, but it seems that I will stay under 70C with no problems.

Not sure your "Zalman 9500A" is good enough for an Oc @ 4 or 4.2ghz.
Overclock with the Sabertooth is easy.
The big cons of this mobo is the NB temps (MCH in Bios). Need to install a fan onto NB or wait for eventual waterblock for this mobo.
