New to Case Modding

Thread Starter
I maybe new, but I am familiar with DIY techniques and some more advanced stuff as well.

Currently, my case (ULTRA products, Aluminus case) is falling apart. It's made entirely of aluminum in plastic, and a few years ago, this was all the rage. I found out why it fell out of favor. Very few of the screws in the expansion slots grip any more, only room for 2 120mm fans, hard drive cage is incredibly flimsy (as in drives fall if you breath on them wrong - almost literally). It's just not a very good case.

However, I have a HAF X in the mail right now, and it should be here soon. I also ordered some other trinkets: Cooler master Hyper 212 Plus (my old Zalman cooler can only keep my Core 2 Quad Q6600 @2.4Ghz at 45c when Idle - in a 19c room), 2x 120mm Cooler Master Sickle Flow fans and a new Optical drive. I plan to use the two Cooler Master fans for the cooler, and I'm going to stick the fan that came with the cooler in the VGA cooling shroud that comes with the HAF X. I don't plan on reusing any fans from my current case - one died just this morning, the other clicks every now and again and the one on the cooler isn't worth salvaging.

Now onto my real question: I've lived with a second rate case for some time now. Now that I'm finally getting a quality product, I want to spruce it up a little. Any suggestions? I started looking around Google for ideas - and came across you guys.

I'm open to just about anything - except water cooling. I'm still in a college environment, I'd rather not have to deal with the upkeep and it is more expensive than plain old air cooling.
That said - I do go to a tech school and have access to precision machining equipment. I could probably make my own heat sink if I really wanted to.

I'm more just looking for ideas (I'll probably come up with a ton once I get my hands on the case and get everything all settled inside). I probably won't start planning it out until summer gets closer. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or tips you might share.

Hey, welcome to OCN!

There are a ton of things you can do. Painting the case (inside or outside) to match a certain color theme you might have in mind, adding a window (does the HAF X come with a window?), and cutting some holes for cable management are all things you might consider doing. Look around the case mod work logs section because there are quite a few HAF mods that might get your mind going!

When you get the case study it very carefully and ask yourself "how can I make this better? What do you like about it? What don't you like? Then buy a Dremel. As far as machining stuff start off with something simple like case feet out of aluminum. Anything is possible given enough time, tools and interest.
