2 6970 or 2 gtx 580 - Page 2

Keep your 5970, wait for a real upgrade later in 2011 when Nvidia releases Kepler and whatever AMD has in store.

another one of these threads.. rly?

GTX 570 is bit faster then 6970 so logic would say a GTX 580 sli would rape 2 6970's but also cost like $300 more

Coming from a 5970 myself, I can honestly say even going to a SINGLE 6950 is an upgrade. Yes I said it and I'm not crazy or trolling.

First off, the 5970 has a huge memory problem when powering my 30" monitor and while the card may produce a higher max or average fps than a single 6950, its minimum frames is horrible. It happens in every game but the worst is in Crysis Warhead where fps dips to 2-4fps whenever there is an explosion: the whole point of the game or turning up the eye candy is to see the nice explosion and physics but if it turns into a slideshow each time a car explodes it really limits the experience. With a 6950, the minimum is about 20fps even with huge action, and it stays at a playable 30fps so the gameplay experience is many times better.

Secondly, I tried running NFS Hot Pursuit with a 5970 and it will fluctuate between 40-60fps whereas a single 2GB 6950 can render that game at 60fps and never drops. A 6950 can produce >60fps in most games but it gets 40fps in black ops/mafia 2/assassins' creed II/f1 2010. However once you add a 2nd card it will break the 60fps barrier and gameplay is perfectly smooth, something that the 5970 can never do.

Don't let the drivers rumor scare you, I have experience no issue and ATI really impressed me this round. I was about to go 570 SLI but save yourself some money and go with the 6900 series. If you get 6970 CF then you will get 10-15% more framerates over the 6950 but you can just unlock like I did. Both my Sapphires 6950 are unlocked running 100% stable at 6970 clocks.

It depends on your set-up. At high-res (2560X1600 or more) and/or multiple screens set-up, then GTX 580 is a joke for the price, compared to 2X 6970. Not enough video RAM, and often BEHIND 2X6970 in alot of games.

If you play at 1080p or less, 1x 24'' sceen, then go with Nvidia...lol... But who wants to buy top-of-the-line cards to play with middle-of-the-line resolution? For me, GTX 580 SLI is really meh, since 2X6970 for alot less $, has more video RAM and doing better at high-res-top-of-the-line gaming!
