My First OC - AMD Phenom II X4 965 - Page 2

Can't get it to run stable above 4GHz with a 17 x 240 setup. Even at 1.51V. Upped my NB to 2640 at 1.27V. Sound right?

Also, I feel really stupid. CPU-Z and Hardware Monitor both read fluctuations in my CPU core voltage. In the BIOS, my voltage is set at 1.386V, but when at idle, CPU-Z reads 1.368V, then at load, it reads 1.408V. What does this? CnQ and Speedstep are both off.

what are your temps? you might just be too hot, even if you are under the max limit, it can still cause stability issues.

Did you try 20x200? And move your ram to stock.
If this is not stable then its highly likely the temps.

I'm about to try it at 20x200, I just can't run my RAM at the specified timings with that config which makes me sad.

When I try it at 17x240 it's unstable in Prime95 but the temps are only @ ~55C. This is with my NB @ 2640MHz.

When starting a new overclock, you should always leave everything stock and just overclock the cpu, when you reach your goal, then play with other settings.
Just do 20x200, stock ram, nb 2400, and ht link around 1800

Tried these numbers and could not get it stable with any voltage below 1.5V.

Played around with a lower mult and higher FSB, couldn't get it stable past 3.84GHz.

It seems strange because I'm passing 2 or 3 tests in Prime95 while at 4GHz and my temps are only at 52C.

Also, concerning the fluctuation in my CPU voltage. Let's say I set it at 1.43V in the BIOS, well, once I boot up, every program that I have reading my voltages says it starts off at 1.43V or so, but moves up to 1.47V or so.

I hear this is called vdroop or something. I was wondering why my CPU is doing this and should it be doing it.

Edit: I got it stable running at 3.96GHz and the NB at 2.64Ghz. However my core temps were hovering around 60C while running Prime95 for a couple hours. This seems way too high.
