Custom TV Stand/Media and Speaker Cabinet

Thread Starter
After visiting over 25 furniture, audio/video, and department stores I have decided to admit defeat in finding a stand that fit my requirements in our price range. My HTPC case needs at least 20" deep shelves and most stands are 18" or less inside dimension. I don't want to cut out the back of one we buy so I have decided to entertain the idea of building one myself.

After looking around and liking the Synergy system from Salamander designs, I've found some good resources. This custom clone is very similar in build to what I plan to do. I want to put my speakers inside with custom sections for them and have room for our HTPC, Wii, and anything else we might add. I plan to use 1" x 1" x 24" 80/20 Aluminum extrusion for the verticals and 3/4" wood for the top and bottom. Shelves can be of anything as they are never seen. I plan to take airflow and cable management into consideration as well. Here is a preliminary render of the general setup:

33529944.png

~27" high and 24" deep (22" interior). 48" wide. The two side cabinets have mesh and the center is smoked acrylic. I may also use a mesh of sorts for airflow there. The sides are sheets of opaque black polycarbonate/acrylic.

Has anyone built anything like this before? Used 80/20aluminum extrusion? I can use any advice and/or previous experience to judge whether this is something I can/want to tackle. I plan to spend no more than $300 but with custom projects I know not to set a strict budget. tongue.gif

Input?

Has Syr been hailed? he's an ex-carpenter and we all know he can craft the acrylic sections. Just don't know about his schedule. I do know he has a lot of work on his plate but he'd be my go-to guy for input.

I think it's a great idea and will be happy to help however I can. biggrin.gif

I don't mind building it myself and I know he has other stuff on his plate at the moment. However, should he decide to build it for me at no charge I'd have to accept. biggrin.gif And I do agree, I bet he has some great information to share. If nothing else to tell me to give up. lachen.gif

The more I think about this, the more I think I might actually be able to pull it off. lachen.gif Planned correctly, it shouldn't be much more work than LEGOs. Right now, attaching the doors and shelves seem to be the main focus and will take the most work. Building the doors as well...

But that's the easy part. Just use those panel attachment thingamajiggers we looked at. And make sure to do the accordian-style sliding doors

The accordion doors only work when I use the 80/20 as horizontal supports as well. I don't think that's going to happen with the new design (which I prefer).
