Alright, I've been speccing out parts and I'm guesstimating that it shouldn't cost more than $350 and shouldn't be too difficult for my meager experience. The hardest parts look to be the front cabinet doors.

Has anyone build these types of doors before? For the two side doors I think I will use perforated metal sheets ([ame="http://www.amazon.com/Carbon-Perforated-Staggered-Center-Spacing/dp/B003DKJPSC/ref=sr_1_4?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1293997363&sr=1-4"]like this[/ame]) painted black. That way it will let the sound come out just fine but also helps with airflow and is a bit more 7-month-old-proof than the fabric. I don't think it will be too difficult to do with the metal as I can just cut to fit, slightly larger than the opening, and nail/staple it to the door.

The center door will have a ~20" x 17" piece of smoked acrylic. I'm not sure how to securing it in the door. I don't know how to make the outer frames for the doors. The tutorials I found were mostly picture-less which sure doesn't help me.

Any insight?

edit: Also, for an interim solution we picked up a 14" high cabinet from craigslist that holds our HTPC, receiver, and Wii as long as the feet are removed and the inside shelf is removed and the back is removed. But hey, it has doors. biggrin.gif

My HTPC case needs at least 20" deep shelves and most stands are 18" or less inside dimension. I don't want to cut out the back of one we buy so I have decided to entertain the idea of building one myself.

After looking around and liking the Synergy system from Salamander designs, I've found some good resources. This custom clone is very similar in build to what I plan to do. I want to put my speakers inside with custom sections for them and have room for our HTPC, Wii, and anything else we might add. I plan to use 1" x 1" x 24" 80/20 Aluminum extrusion for the verticals and 3/4" wood for the top and bottom. Shelves can be of anything as they are never seen. I plan to take airflow and cable management into consideration as well. Here is a preliminary render of the general setup:

~27" high and 24" deep (22" interior). 48" wide. The two side cabinets have mesh and the center is smoked acrylic. I may also use a mesh of sorts for airflow there. The sides are sheets of opaque black polycarbonate/acrylic.

Has anyone built anything like this before? Used 80/20aluminum extrusion? I can use any advice and/or previous experience to judge whether this is something I can/want to tackle. I plan to spend no more than $300 but with custom projects I know not to set a strict budget. tongue.gif

Input?

I have found that it's better to build using cabinet grade B-2 Birch plywood and veneer it in the desired species. You can often obtain well kept flat stock from local cabinet shops at about $60 per sheet. You can make the best use of each sheet by laying out all your cuts in advance on grid paper to minimize waste. Oak veneer is common and you can purchase it online for about $45-80 per sheet depending on what you select. I recommend prefinishing all the veneered parts before assembly. It's much easier to sand them and get an even application of finish. If you are looking for an ebonized finish be aware that you will need to build up a number of coats of shellac or clear poly before any heavy sanding or you will burn through the stain and leave light areas.

I can't comment on whether your $300 budget is adequate for materials because I am not inclined to do a complete breakdown of your project. But if you figure how many sheets of ply and veneer you need and how much extrusion you require I think you'll figure it out easily enough.

Good luck.
