The program uses your GPU to manipulate a protein and then sends the data to Stanford University.

if that is the case. You can produce some great PPD. Fermis are great folders, and the 465 is one of the best/$. You can get 13,000 PPD with it. 6,000 PPD from 260 and probably 6 from the x4. With ~25k PPD.

In short, you have a great folding rig.

Well the way he worded it sounds like he wants us to convince him.

There are a few different reasons.

The main one is, you want to make a difference. If someone you know or care about has a disease like Huntington's, or Alzheimer's, woudln't you like to do anything possible to help? And if that is just leaving your GPU running while you're on the computer, why not?

A lot of us leave on our computers 24/7, and buy rigs specifically for Folding, but there's no need to go that far if you don't want to. If you use your computer for 12 hours a day, and just use your 2 GPUs for Folding in that time, then that's not gonna impact your performance (you can even turn off the clients when you wnat to game), but it does make a difference.

Another reason is the competition. Many people will say that if you Fold, it should be for the research, and not for the points, but it's naive to think people aren't competitive. If someone starts Folding at the same time as their friend, 9 times out of 10, they're gonna try and beat them. That snowballs into people wants to beat as many people on the team as possible.

You won't know how you really feel about it until you give it a go. Check out some of the guides (or PM me) and try it out for a couple of days. If you feel it's not for you, no harm done. If it makes no difference to you at all, why not leave it Folding?

And who knows, you might even enjoy it. Plus, we have plenty of fun around here, so if you just wanna hang out for that, then that's fine too.

The clients (CPU and GPU) will put your hardware under 100% load. As long as the temperatures are below the max specified by each component, this will not reduce the life of your hardware.

The SMP client (for CPUs) can also throttle its usage, so if you have another program, or a game, that needs some CPU usage, the SMP client will allow that. GPUs less so... if you want to play games or use GPU intensive programs, you'll need to close the GPU client. But when you're finished, you can always start it up again and pick up where you left off.

Again, if you're interested, even a little bit, try a single GPU client out. It's the easiest client to set up, and it will get you the most short term points too.

And then if you've got more questions, or want to get more points, we're here to answer your questions.

You should fold because you would use up more electricity which brings up your family's or your electric bill.

Thank you for that.

By that logic, why game, or browse the internet? Those are less helpful than Folding (even if you don't think it's very helpful, you cannot deny the research that it's done).
