Of course it can; but then in 10 years you can apply the same logic. Same comes with upgrading your rig for games/rendering.
However, the reasearch we do today, will improve the research we will be able to do in 10 years. In addition to researching proteins, Folding is also an ever-developing DC project, which is become more efficient all the time. So while the computational performance might increase many times in 10 years, we would have lost a lot of work on the DC part of the project. Plus, as Chris said, what if a major breakthrough is only 2/3 years away? We can trudge through for 3 years, or wait 10 years and do it in a few months.

No cures directly; Folding is concerned with gaining a full understanding of proteins, not actually use that information to cure diseases.
