i7 930 vs 950

Thread Starter
hi guys, basically im on a budget, and i can get a 930 for around £150 on ebay, whereas the 950, is around £220, im going to overclock it to around 4ghz, so if they are running at the same frequency surely they will perform the same..

can someone tell me whether i am right?
or am i being a n00b.

The 930 will overclock better from what I've read.

(d0 stepping...batch numbers have a play in it as well.)

Can you find out the batch #?

They'll both be D0 steppings, but how they OC depends on the batch #. They should both do 4gHz-the question is how much voltage they need to get there...the 950 has a higher multiplier than the 930, so in getting there you also don't need to bump the BCLK as high.

I got my 950 to 4gHz quick and easy@ 175mHzx23, and I only need 1.24VCore although I could probably do it with less...a 930, due to the lower multiplier would need to be at 190mHzx21. Your choice of RAM also enters into it, as some RAM doesn't OC as well as others.

It really goes either way nowadays, though I haven't seen an awful lot of great clocking 950's. Personally I'd pick a 930, or even a 920 if available for around the same.

In theory but this isn't always the case.

From my reading around it seems most 950's hit about 4.2ghz on average.
