Workstation Processors

Thread Starter
Hokay
so

I do a lot of Cadding, Matlabbing while listening to music, and game when I need a break. I want a system that can do all of it well.

My thought Process:

The AMD 1090T is attractive for the price, but it's an old arch from what I understand and won't be anything special in a year.

the i7 9xx are nice, albeit expensive. My only reservation is that sandy bridge (and more importantly) ivy bridge are on their way...

I then considered a server processor, like the Xeon x5650/5660 and the Opteron 6168. They seem to be the most common for workstations, but are they worth the price? The Bulldozer arch is also supposed to be pretty killer, but isn't that a ways out?

End thinking.

So what advice can anyone lend? Right now, I'm leaning toward a server processor, but waiting for the new architecture is a possibility too.

ACAD? Isn't it single threaded? Server CPU's are generally lower VID to reduce power consumption which is one of the reasons they are more expensive.

The difference between those chips and desktop chips is that some of those server chips (you have to be careful to check which ones) have 2 QPI links, meaning you can use them in dual socket motherboards. While the regular desktop chips and low end Xeon chips only have 1 QPI link, so they can only be run in single socket boards.

If this is done professionally, then something like a Dell or Lenovo workstation would be great (especially with the nice warranty). Or if you would like to build your own, then a nice dual socket board would be great; though you might be best server with a decent CPU, and an Nvidia Quadro/ATI Firestream workstation card for your work.

What is your budget?

OP: FYI if you're wanting to overclock, forget about the Opterons. They don't overclock much if any.

Given that socket G34 is a server socket, I wouldn't expect so.

OP: If overclocking is a must, then that rules out just about all dual socket solutions; save the EVGA SR-2 with dual Intel 1366 sockets.

No not AutoCAD. It's NX 7, which is multithread.

I looked at the Lenovo D20, but it comes with Quadro cards, which don't crank out the gaming part like a geforce or Radeon 68xx. In another thread I was planning on going over that.

I won't spend more than $1200 on a processor or any combination of processors.

I'm indifferent to overclocking. whatever gets me the best performance.

If you're doing rendering, the Quadro cards will BURY any gaming card (Radeon or GTX)at that task. Bury by a factor 2-3X.

Exactly.

Even a 9600GT equivalent Quadro would be a good buy for AutoCAD.

You could grab say a Dell T5500, then the dual quad core CPU option is only something like $1800, plus GPU.

here's my graphics card discussion

I looked at the Dell's but my experience with them is less-than-grand, so that's more of a second/third option. good price though!

Their service is pretty awesome for the Optiplex and Precision lines, but if you don't like them then HP or Lenovo would be your best bet.

Given the experience you have probably had with your T61, I can't blame you for wanting to go Lenovo. I don't have any real experience with their new desktops, but if they are even half as good as the Thinkpad series, then they would be a great buy for you. I googled around a bit for reviews on the D20, and I really can't find much in the way of pictures, but it is business grade, so it should be great.
