please help!!! 6870 xfire problems

Thread Starter
hello all,

im having some major problems with my 6870's x 2 in crossfire.

i have ran heaven 2.1 and 3dmark vantage multiple times and i am getting great results with xfire vs running a single card. my scores go up dramatically, like i expected they would.

the problem is, i have benchmarked 3 different games multiple times, and im getting less performance in these games with crossfire enabled.

bad company 2
single card - 85 fps avg
crossfire - 53 fps avg

black ops
single card - 114 fps avg
crossfire - 102 fps avg

dragon age
single card - 65 fps avg
crossfire - 60 fps avg

im running 10.12 drivers with profiles installed.

what is getting me, is my scores in heaven benchmark and 3dmark vantage almost double with crossfire enabled...but in games im literally getting less performance with both cards.

help.... very confused novice here.

Well let me clear something up. Benchmark scores mean nothing... As you can see first hand higher bench scores does not mean more FPS. Benchmarks are really just for people to brag, there are 3rd party programs that can boost your score not to mention you can just hack it.
Disable crossfire and play your game then you get more FPS.

You should try the Von Modded drivers from Guru3D. They really helped with my CrossfireX performance problems.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=332395

Basically what you do is, download the latest 10.12 WHQL from AMD

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloa...n_win7-64.aspx

Make sure to get the Catalyst Software Suite, not the Preview Drivers.

Then download the Von Mod Pack v1.2

http://www.filefront.com/17693074/AM...Pack%20v1.2.7z
http://www.multiupload.com/3W1B3NJN48

Then go to the ASRock site and get the AMD All In One package that contains your chipset drivers. You'll need a few things from this package later.

http://www.asrock.com/MB/download.as...reme3&o=Win764

Once you have the drivers and the Von Mod Pack ready, then do an Express Uninstall of all Catalyst Software from Control Panel --> Programs and Features.

Also uninstall your Crossfire Application Profiles. The Von Mod Pack has its own that you will be installing later.

Once you have uninstalled your current drivers/app profiles, restart and when you get back into Windows go into your Device Manager (Right Click My Computer --> Properties --> Device Manager) and under Display Adapters, if your cards say ATi Radeon 6800 Series, then right click and uninstall the driver and click Delete Driver Software.

Keep doing that until they say Standard VGA Display Adapter, Action --> Scan for Hardware Changes if needed, and reboot if necessary until you get them to say Standard VGA Display Adapter.

Once you have both your cards reading as Standard VGA Display Adapter you can begin the installation process.

The first thing you're going to want to do is go into the Von Mod Pack 1.2 folder and run the TwL cleaner utility. Follow its steps until all of the old driver remnants and reg keys are off of your system.

Once you're done with that and before you install your graphics drivers, you need to install your chipset drivers. Run the 8.71 All In One WHQL that you downloaded from the ASRock support page. Click Install and then make sure you click Custom and not Express. When you get to the page where you pick what to install, uncheck everything that is uncheckable except for the USB driver and the Northbridge Filter Driver (this will also install your SM_Bus driver). After that click install and when it is all done it will ask if you want to reboot. Click Restart Later.

Now it's time to install the Catalyst Software Suite 10.12 drivers that you got from the AMD driver page. You can go ahead and click Express install on these, but I prefer Custom so that I can tell it not to install the HDMI Audio driver and the Lord of the Rings Trial. When the install is finished, it will ask again if you want to Reboot. Click Restart Later again, there is still one more thing to do before you Restart.

Go into the Von Mod Pack 1.2 folder again and open up the subfolder that says AMD Catalyst Application Profiles (CAP)VonSwitcher 10.12and run the CAP Switcher.cmd

It will ask if you want to install the 0kb Dummy File (A fake file that fools the drivers into thinking the app profiles are installed when they aren't *it boosts performance in certain games like Final Fantasy XIV for me) OR the latest CAP. For now choose the latest CAP and when it finishes you can finally Restart your computer.

Once you've restarted, go into the Von Mod Pack 1.2 folder again and open up the Von Tweaks folder. Run the Von Tweaks.cmd and you're done!

Usually after this part, I go into my Device Manager and disable my ATi HDMI Audio for both of my cards as it interferes with my onboard sound and pisses me off royally. (If you actually use the HDMI Audio for something don't do this step)

*Copypasta'd from my other post on a CFX issue thread*

I hope this helps you out!

:Edit: lol it sure was a funny coincidence that both you and Viridian1 have the same ASRock Extreme3 board.

Alright, good luck with everything.

And make sure to follow the Guru3D VonModded thread, he releases a new Mod Pack for every driver release just about.

Wut? Why would someone even go SLI or xfire then? I get WAY better fps with SLI enabled.

OP, I hope you get it sorted out and get what you paid for. Something is wrong for sure.
