Workstation Cards

Hokay,
so

My next computer will be running a lot of programming and cad, but I also play games and I want them to look good.

So my idea: Use two cards; one a quadro and the other a geforce and sli them together to get the best of both worlds, ie cuda cores combined with the speed of geforce for games.

I will most likely do a three monitor set-up, but that's in the future.

1) Is that even possible?
2) Is that a good idea?
2.1) if it's a bad idea, what should I do? both cad and games are equal here.

The only difference between quadro cards and a regular gaming card is the drivers I am pretty sure (maybe firmware?). I don't think you can SLi a regular card and a quadro card though, not that you would want to.

SLI Quadro and Geforce cards? Definitely not recommended and probably not even possible.

Large variance in drivers between the two series of cards.

that's why I was thinking of adding the geforce to it to compensate.

Here is what ya do. You get two monitors, one you hook up to the quadro card, the other you hook up to the geforce card. You play your games on the monitor connected to the geforce card and you use cad on the one connected to the quadro card.

IIRC that should shift the processing to whichever card the monitor is being run from. I could be totally wrong though.

Good idea but that would require two (different) drivers running simultaneously. Don't think this is possible.

That is where my knowledge ends. I didn't think it was possible either but I wasn't sure.

Maybe he could run his CAD in a virtual machine with only the quadro drivers installed?

Yeah I don't think you can do that. Honestly, if you don't have to do a huge amount of rendering, the Geforce series should be fine. Depending on your budget, SLI 580s would probably be more than enough for almost anything.
