Just finished the SCII campaign...

I loved it so much and the ending was so great. I really hope Blizzard or someone invests in making a worthwhile movie out of this. If done right that could be a real blockbusting movie. I really want to see it. This is easily one of the best single player campaigns I have played in many years.

Loved how the missions were setup in the campaign, and how you interact with the characters and upgrades and all that in between... But I found the story really lacking compared to SC/BW which I play every year or so. Just didn't suck me in, at all.

The worst thing was the voice acting(not units during gameplay). I thought they were a massive step down compared to the first 2 games. Especially Zeratul who is one of the best voiced characters ever in the first 2.

SCII single player was great. I myself am replaying it on Brutal now and its quite fun.

As far as the story goes generally the first part of a series is just setting up for better things to come. It did some things better than SC1/BW, and some things worse.

While I don't play SC on a yearly basis, I agree, SC/BW felt a lot more engaging because they were talking to you. In this case, it felt like they were talking to Jim and you were watching(you were watching Jim but your Jim at the same time ). Much better idea would've been to have character talking to you directly when interacting with others

I also think it felt better because SC had all three races playable in one game. We're only getting one side of the story in the "first" SCII

That is true, they made it seem like you were watching a movie and not actually in the action. I am not complaining, I still think it was golden.

The writing in my opinion was pretty cheesy. I just didn't think they told the story as well. Unless they get better writers, or more involved from the first game I don't see it changing with the expansions. I still had a great time though, and I'll be buying the rest of them day 1.
