Dual Monitor Questions

Thread Starter
I am thinking about switching to dual monitor gameplay. I have two concerns though..

1: I seem to have no DVI Cables lying around, but a few VGA cables. My current GPU is connected to my monitor (in sig) by DVI, if I connect my GPU to the second monitor by VGA would that be good or bad? Like what am I missing?

2: The second monitor isn't a replica of mine. My first one is again m,y sig one, and the second is a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050. Anything wrong?

Thanks!

What are you going to play with dual monitors? Most games don't really work because your aimer/middle of screen has the edge of the monitor on it.

VGA isnt too different from DVI from my experiance, other than VGA seems to have a few blurry spots on it sometimes. For gaming though theres not much difference if you ask me.

What games? With different resolutions, different colors, as well as the bezel break right in the middle of crosshairs...I think you're in for some annoyance across the board.

I've owned two 226BWs (before my 245BWs) and they were amazing displays.

DVI is a digital connection and VGA is analog. If you use a VGA cable you are forcing the digital signal from your computer to be converted to analog then re-converted back to digital (at the monitor). This results in loss of quality.

If you need to pick up a cheap DVI cable, I highly recommend Monoprice.com. Here is a link to their DVI cable selection. Unless you need a long one, you'll pay less than $5 for a top-quality cable.

As for gaming on dual displays... you can't really. Most games are designed so the center of the screen is where most of the action takes place. With dual displays, the 'center' of the screen (if you consider both monitors together as the screen) is actually right where the bezels meet, so it's far from ideal. You'd need triple monitors to get the best multi-display gaming experience.

it should work fine

see if you can find a dvi cable at a computer store, or if your monitor also has a VGA connection, you can use a DVI - VGA adapter and use a VGA cable.

Dual monitor gaming sucks more than anything else. You can't see anything with the bezel of the monitors in the middle

VGA has a VERY slight interference that you won't notice with that kind of panels. Nothing wrong with it..

If you want to game with 2x screens, they both have to be the same resolution. So it would be 2x 1680x1050

Not necessarily.

There's:
DVI-D which is digital
DVI-A which is analog
DVI-I which can be both digital and analog depending on the device
....
I think there's now a DVI spec which has on bus USB.

Just because it is DVI does not mean it is a digital signal...and odds are the difference between VGA and DVI would be the least of the problems associated with mixing brands and sizes of monitors.

Ok so looks like I am sticking with single monitor until I can actually do tri monitors. My card has 2 DVI and 1 I think mini display port (it is a small square). If I connect two via DVI and one via Mini Display would it matter?
