Need help Oc'ing i3 550

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm currently having trouble getting my i3 550 to 4.2ghz which was my goal but I only seem to be stable around 4.0ghz with the following:

22 multi
1.35 vcore
1.31 icm = vtt
bclk 182
lowest qpi which i forget now ><

Asus Maximus iii Gene
2x2gb GSkill Ripjaws 1600mhz 9-9-9-24
XFX 5770
Cooler Master gx650w psu

I've been runing blend tests @4.2ghz with prime 95 and the 1 core will always fail within a minute or 2 even with HT disabled, I've even tried cranking up the vcore to 1.37 and icm 1.35 and the 1 core will fail within a few minutes in prime 95 blend test. I'm starting to think this cpu is a bit of a dud with how much voltage I have to give it just to run @4.0ghz. Could anyone give me some solid advice or have I reached the limit? Thanks.

Also even when the 1 core will fail in prime 95 I'm still able to play Black Ops for an hour or so with no problems at all, should I run a different stress test?

Sometimes i just don't trust prime95. I can run a bunch of REALLY heavy games for +2 hours and when i stress test the system fails within 5 minutes? You should try to test your system doing what you usually do. If it doesnt fail then you are all good. Besides, most of the time you don't get to use 100% of the cpu.

So far I'm up to 4.68ghz - still trying to get stable with it higher. Not bad for $60 RAM, $129 CPU, Free Motherboard and a $60 Cooler

This makes no sense. If your machine can't run the stress tests - it's not stable.

Well its stable for what he uses it for, so isnt that all that really matters?

Not really. I guess that is "acceptable to him" but not really stable. I could understand if you could run prime95 for 3-4 hours and then crash out, but for a really short period of time you really aren't stable at all.

but then someone else might run p95 for 72 hours, and then calls it stable

If he then says your p95 for 3 - 4 hours isnt really anything, does that make it "not really stable"

If you get my jist

Their isnt really a universal indicator for stabillity, its pertains more to what the user classifys as stable

For 1 user that could mean runs all his games fine, for another it could mean 72 hours of p95

i3,s run more stable on odd multis

So drop the multi down to 21 x instead of 22
then raise the bclk to 200 so your at 4.2 again

Keep the vtt voltage around 1.3 for now

See if you can stabilise with lower v core that way
