5870 problems after installing aftermarket cooler

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I decided I wanted to install a aftermarket cooler on my 5870. After installing it the pc will give the post sound but nothing will show up on my monitors. I tried re-seating the heatsink multiple times and no dice. I also tried a different card and it works fine. I also noticed that on the post display the post code keeps changing to random post codes. The fans work and everything even though the fans power comes from the motherboard and not from the actual card.

Any idea on what to do?

Have you tried installing the stock heatsink back on the card? did you scratch anything on the PCB when you installed it?

Check for a short. Pay close attention to avoid frying your card.

just spend like 20 minutes cleaning the gpu die with 99% isopropyl alcohol and putting on the stock cooler, nothing. I swapped pci-e slots and still nothing. The thing will post but nothing will come up on the screen. I'm pretty freaking pissed right now.

I am like 99% sure you killed your card some how. well better luck next time. make sure next time you pay extra close attention when putting on the aftermarket cooler.

I was really freaking careful, worked on wood with no carpet underneath. Wore gloves, didint break off anything, just put on the ram heatsinks, and the cooler. If the card is broken then why is it posting?

Have you tried putting the stock cooler back on and see if it still works?

I have a reference 5870 w/ aftermarket cooling. it was a bit tricky to install.

If the comptuer doesn't display anything on screen, then it isn't posting. it is powering up but not posting.
Why did you wear gloves, you probably shocked the card or something. You aren't suppose to wear gloves. you want to be able to touch the case and other such parts so they ground out with you.
