my external hardrive worked fine this morning but now when i plug it in it doesn't show up and really slows my computer down . i took the hardrive out of the external enclosure and plugged it in directly by my motherboard using sata cables and still the exact same problem.

hardrive powers up fine though and i can feel it seeking on the discs inside.

shows up fine in device manager as well :

Your drive is failing. There is many things you can do to attempt to fix it but the end result will be the same for that hard drive. Get a new one and back up asap.

Few things you can do to save the data.

You can try booting it over and over in hopes it works.

You can freeze the drive. Number of faqs on how to do this and may help you get enough time out of your drive to get a back up.

You can send the drive into a HDD repair facility, paying loads of money and hope you get what you need.

EDIT - I fail for double post.

When you say freeze, do you mean in a Freezer for 30mins something like that?

THere should be a post about freezing here somewhere on OCN.

YOu basically put a harddrive in a anti-static bag, then in a airtight bag for around an hour, then you take it out, boot it up asap and backup everything on it.
