Thanks so much for your help.
You did what I had hoped would give you the sound back from the onboard, so disabling the 4 instances of the NVidia HD Audio is exactly what I meant. I figured that by disabling the GTX's drivers that the only device left would be the Realteck chip, and then you could then set it as default. But I guess since you tried that... it didn't work.

Is there anything that can think you did around the time the sound went out?

Do you have another graphic card? Try slot it in to see if it make a different. To me it seems like there is conflict between your current graphic card the and onboard sound card.

I do not have another gpu, but it worked for awhile before this, and when I tried completely reinstalling windows without any drivers there was still no sound. When I first installed 7 I remember having sound before drivers were installed.

Thanks for the continuing help!

Stensby... just to note, and your problem is driving me crazy. Based on your screen shot of your "playback devices"... The red arrows shown on the speakers and headphones, usually means the devices are disabled. This is just like the black and white arrows that occur on the icons in device manager when you disabled the NVidia drivers.

I might be wrong, but I would tend to believe that if the Mobo audio chip went bad, you wouldn't even see the speakers as a greyed out option, or be able to install drivers for the device. I also noticed a question mark on "Other Devices" in your screenie of device manager... Do you have an "unknown" device in there? If so, do you know what that is?

Also, if I unplug my speakers from the back of my computer, the speakers still remain the default sound device... they don't grey out. Another simple/stupid thought.. did someting get turned off in the Realtec audio control panel?

It probably is, or again I don't think you could install drivers, but I gotta ask another really stupid question... Is the oboard sound still enabled in your BIOS?

I'm unfortunately still stumpped.

I'm glad it's annoying someone else too!

In the "playback devices" these arrows indicate that nothing is plugged into the ports, now however there are a lot of HDMI options since I do not have any nVidia drivers installed. I was thinking, back to the whole GPU thing, that nVidia may have updated the BIOS on my card, which they say they may do when you download updates.

That is the USB 3.0 controller on my motherboard that I have installed drivers for like 3 times and then wiped drivers etc so it didn't have drivers at that point.

See the screenshots below, I can't see any non digital stuff in the Realtek Audio panel

Well I did have an OC applied to my CPU and for the sake of troubleshooting reset the BIOS to defaults, I will have a look and make sure it is turned on, but am pretty sure it is.

Thanks again for your help

Glad you got it working.. I can stop racking my brain for a solution.

If you happen to give any thought to exactly how you fixed it, post a solution. There was at some point 5 members and 5 guests watching this thread, so I have to assume that your issue will become someone elses if that hasn't happened already.

I'll go back into the BIOS and change settings one by one to see-but default BIOS definitely didn't give me audio.
