ditch 580s for 6970s for eyefinity?

Thread Starter
I have a little dilemma. I have 3 30" monitors, 3008wfp, U3011, and a Doublesight DS-305w.

Apparently Nvidia doesn't like them working together I'm assuming it has something to do with sync polarity. I just e-mailed them, and I'm sure I won't hear from them till Monday at the earliest. The question I have is that if I cannot get them working in Surround, I believe they will work in Eyefinity. Now I cannot find much on 3-way 580s vs 3-way 6970s. I am impressed with the scaling of the 6970s though, and debating on selling the 580s and getting the 6970s to work, but FPS I usually play in 2560*1600 so I don't want to lose too much performance at that resolution, and want the surround/eyefinity for Racing/Flight games.

The other option might be to return the DS-305w and instead get another 3011 if 2 of those would work with the 3008. Although this option would cost me roughly ~$450. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.

Well the 2GB vRAM on the 6970s will definitely handle bigger resolutions better.

did you think about waiting for the 6990 to come out? two of those in xfire would do you very good. probably coming with 6950 profiles that you can unlock to 6970s like the 5970 was. that would give you the freedom and power you need for sure to run those monitors.

still i would definitely sell the 3x 580s. when it comes to that resolution the 2gb comes into play. you may be better off asking this question on hardforum as they have more people with your setup than on here.

Well I would say wait and see if you can get an answer from nvidia.

If you don't, or can't wait, switch to the 6970s.

The 2GB vs 1.5GB won't really matter. Its a useless comparison on its own.
The 580s have higher memory bandwidth and interface than the 6970s. So it makes up for the "lack" of memory.
Also if you check reviews, the 580s aren't slower in surround vs eyefinity. They are actually faster.

But since they require same monitor for surround, and if you have issues and can afford it and not wait for an answer, switch.

Well the 6970 memory runs fast to make up for 256bit.
@OP If you can't get it to work then switching wouldn't hurt. 2GB should help with games (over the 580? idk ;p), and scaling is as good, if not better, than the 500 series so performance shouldn't be too far off from 3 580s.

For multi-monitor setups I'd still recommend Ati.

Although I'm very happy with my 580s but I don't have a multi-monitor setup

I would wait to see what they say. Although moving to AMD would mean a less bigger hole in the pocket

That card is being tested as we speak by leprechauns, and when ever you find their gold pot, you will get one in exchange.

I wouldnt even guarantee the 2 dells had the same sync polarity. If you check the owners manual for them it is listed. I had 2 24" dells originally and was just planning on getting a third when i found they didnt have the same sync polarity and they were both dells lol.

assuming you havent already?
