A game, at least digital copies, don't lose their value for a while. Physical copies are another story thanks to profit mongering from places like Gamestop, "What's that? you bought that last week and are done and want to trade it in? Oh you paid $60? well here's $25 for it, and we're gonna turn around and sell it for $55.

At least if you were going to sell your Steam account (hypothetical here since I know selling it is against TOS and I'd never sell my account anyway.) I'd be much more likely to get $2000+ for it (considering it's current retail value is 28 bucks shy of $3000), than say the $1050 I paid for it.

This is of course taking into account that the buyer doesn't know how much I paid.
The thing is how many people do you know willing to shell out that money for your Steam account? They may like some games and not others. They will also know that Steam has their awesome sales and that they could more than likely buy the same games for much cheaper over the long term.

Really the larger your Steam account is the more it works against you for selling it. I honestly think if you put it up on ebay you would at best get what you've actually paid, not the MSRP of the games on it. I work at a store that deals in a lot of second hand goods and I am usually pretty good with this stuff.

I'll never say never but I don't think I would sell my account. I think TOS just applys to seriously trying to sell your account, not just talking about it. If someone offered me a really good sum, say $2000 or up, I think I would take it. I always try and get my games on the best sales possible, which is why I have spent well under a quarter of the amount the calculator says.

We should start comparing ratios, amount of Steam MSRP of games to actual amount paid.

I'm sorry that you have Modern Warfare 2 on your Steam account. I'm sure there's some therapy to help you cope with that.

I doubt your wife will complain too much about the good games though.

Of course this is the case, no one would really pay that much for a Steam account (but then again people pay ridiculous sums of money for WoW accounts), and like I said, I'd never sell mine anyway, my point was simply that using the calculator is a better estimation of sale value than what you actually paid.

Edit: No potential buyer has the ability to know what you personally paid for your games (unless you tell them), so therefore you can haggle much higher. Take for example my account. I paid a shade over $1k, but if I was going to sell it, I'd absolutely try for $2.5k, or $2.25k before going lower, and I'd probably get a buyer for $2.5k. This being the case, the calculator's estimate of value is still the better estimation for sale value.

The second-hand market is very very different when dealing with different items. Different things have much different depreciation rates (as I noted with the car analogy). Drive a car off the lot and you've lost at least 25% of the value. Sell a game you bought the previous day and you can probably get 85% of it's value back just because there are plenty of people who want to save a few bucks here and there. This of course works against you in the case of a Steam account, wherein the larger it is, the harder it is to sell at higher values (as you stated), but again, my point wasn't that it CAN be sold for the estimated value, it was that that estimate was closer to the probable value, especially for the smaller accounts that have mainly the big name items.

When it comes to buying Steam games and justifying to higher beings [wife] I go down the 'well, it was cheaper than your shoes' avenue. This idea is a bit like an OC - either works or it doesn't

In any case I have gazillions of games, too as I will never have more games than she has shoes
