4870 CF uprading to Eyefinity advice

As per title,

I currently have two 4870s in CF, and am looking to upgrade for the sake of running eyefinity. I am mainly considering either some used 58xx cards, or some 69xx, possibly some 68xx cards. Here are my main options, in order of price:

1 x 6950, $283.49, new, on sale
2 x 5850, $300, used
1 x 6970, $372.74, new, on sale

Now, I understand that scaling in a multiple-gpu setup is never 100%, but is there a good reason to go with the 69xx card as opposed to a 5850 CF setup? The intent is to set up Eyefinity soon, and I know the 2gb memory for the 69xx series would be benefitial for 5xxx pixels by 1080 pixels ... but how benefitial?

Advice and speculation please

6970 will be good for you...and seems 1 6970 better 2x5850..

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...firex-review/5

so you can buy 6950 and can do it bios mod..so you can get cheap 6970..

an there is a another option little expensive but excellent,

you can buy 2x6950 and can do it 6970

6850 crossfire
or 6950 crossfire.

If you overclock, then the bang for the buck is 6850 crossfire, the 1gb sets a limit for AA and such eyecandy, but the machine will run great if you lower some settings depending on game - if you like eycandy, then 6950 crossfire is the way to go, 2gb vram makes a huge difference for min fps.
I have with 6850 crossfire in BC2 5760x1080 110fps average, all low settings (940/1140mhz).
I tried to run 6950 crossfire (880/1325mhz) and had similar fps, even a tad lower which I blame on early driver mostly, but I am also likely cpu bound to a degree.

In effect, I have a similar experience with 6850 as with 6950, in BC2 the way I play and set things up. Your milage will vary due to I never use AA in fps shooters and such.
Tried to game with one screen the other day, Gee, its so small.

I am likely to go back to my 6850, run those, and send my 6950 back.
I just dont need that horsepower, even at my resolution the way I game.
If I desired AA, then 6950 is the way to go.

I would go with 6950 and you can try unlocking the shaders and flashing BIOS to make a 6970 and after get an other one so you can CF.

Good Luck !

@ Flopper:

I am looking for it all ... Obviously raw FPS is more important than eyecandy, but If I'm blowing money anyways, I'd ideally go for both

Also, I thought the 6850 was a balls card? I can only find them in my area new, for $200 (and tax, etc). It was my understanding that the 5850 had a slight performance advantage to it ... and I can grab two of those for $300, as opposed to $420 for two 6850s. Either way, I am limited to 1Gb memory. Is there an advantage I am unaware of for 2x6850 for $420 as opposed to 2x5850 for $300?

@ C.Ronaldo7

Interesting! It's a 9800pro to 9800xt all over again! ( ... I just dated myself with an obsolete reference )

Specific brands that are likely to flash? Or do all reference cards have a chance?
