My computer wont restart from Windows!

Thread Starter
Hey guys. If I try to restart my computer through Windows when it's rebooting it'll just hang on the mobo post screen. If I manually hold the power button till it turns off and then turn it on it gets past the post screen and into Windows and everything works!

Any idea why this is happening?

note: This is on my cousins newly built am3 rig, not my sig rig

If I understand you correctly, why are you trying to restart it while its rebooting? Is this even possible?

If I understand you correctly, it doesn't hang upon rebooting because you are "cold booting" it as apposed to warm booting(Restarting the computer from the Operating System).

When you cold boot, the boot loader, stored on the ROM on the motherboard, searches for sectors on your hard drive that the OS is stored on to be loaded into your main memory. I believe this process clears your main memory which is why you are able to boot into Windows without any hangs.

Is there any particular part which it hangs?
RAM check?
Finding hard drives?

Also, I'm slightly sadded that the users above me cannot deduce a missing comma..

OP, I understand what you are asking. I had this issue after I installed AMD Overdrive. The computer would hang on reboot. Uninstalled it and all is well again. But I don't know what is going on with your particular situation.

This happened before I installed the ati video drivers. With the ram kit I bought for the rigone of the sticks was totally dead and i'm using the other for the time being... Maybe the second stick of ram isn't too good as well and that's why it hangs? i'll let you guys know if it still happens after I return the sticks for new ones.

Have you tried the following?
Memtest both of the RAM modules individually *If one of the sticks is bad, RMA it*
Try and reboot from Windows using just the one "good" stick *If it still doesn't reboot then it must be some other issue*

Let us know after you do the above tasks...

One of the sticks is totally dead. The other stick survived about 20 runs of IntelBurnTest and like 10% of a memtest (had to turn it off because it needed to be used). I'll do a full memtest tonight. '

Rebooting from Windows with the one "working" ram stick makes the computer hang on the post screen, like I said earlier.

I think I actually have the same problem. However for me it was an overclock issue. Now that I think about it I think it was probably caused by me pushing my ram to far.

I reduced my CPU overclock and all was good again. So my ram is holding my q6600 back.

Okay guys, tested the dimm that works with memtest and it looks to be working 100%

It still doesn't reboot through Windows.

What still gives?
