Audio setup for under $300

Thread Starter
Ok, so I still haven't bought anything for Christmas because I didn't really know what to buy, but now I've convinced myself that I need an audio upgrade for my PC, since I use it for music, movies and games and my current audio setup kinda sucks. I have the X-230 by Logitech, which is a decent 2.1 system for the price (50 bucks 3 years ago) and the awful, terrible and cheap Creative Fatal1ty headset (worst headset I could've bought, lol).

Obviously I need better sound quality. At first I was thinking upgrading the headset would make the most sense and I started looking for gaming headsets, but then I realised that I don't really need one of those since I'm not playing competitively, so then I started looking for 5.1 surround speakers, but saw they were mostly out of my budget (or not available in my country), especially since I want to pair whatever I buy with a decent sound card...

So I don't know, I'm pretty confused, lol. Maybe I should get a pair of headphones that are good for everything and not just gaming, like the HD 555? Or maybe I should buy a better 2.1 speaker system? I'd really like the surround because I've never had a surround system in my life, but I don't really know if the price is worth it...

Anyway, I'd really like to know what you guys think about this and I'm looking forward to read your opinions. . If you need me to provide some more info I'd be happy to do so, just ask.

By the way, keep in mind that my budget is around $300 and I'd also like to buy a nice sound card.

Thanks for your help and have a happy New Year's Eve!!

You should look into getting some good headphones and a sound card. For 300, you could get a decent set of headphones and a sound card. Equivelant speakers are going to cost a bit more, so budget-wise headphones are the best way to go IMO.

Yes, this is more or less what I was thinking, but I don't know. I think headphones are pretty limited compared to speakers. Maybe I can't get the best speakers out there for $300, but I think I can still get something better than headphones. What do you think?

Well, the thing is, I could use a pair of good headphones or good speakers better than avarage headphones and avarage speakers... I really want to get all the juice I can from the $300.

Edit: The HD595 looks good though. But maybe there are better alternatives (meaning speakers)?

I just found the HD 598 for 165€ and free shipping (yes, my currency is euros ), which is a 15€ difference from the cheapest HD 595 I can find online, so that's definitely an option... I think the HD 598 looks really good and they're affordable too. Btw, my budget in euros is around 275€, I just said $300 because it seemed like a nice round figure that everyone can recognise.

You should do what I did, and order from amazon. m50s would have cost 160€ here, but I got them for 100$ Even with expensive shipping and taxes, it'll be less than buying from anywhere europe.

Those look like they have some very good reviews, but it says they are "monitor" headphones? What does this mean?

It means they are used for studio work, but don't let that affect you... Ex: 2.1 speakers, which people use for music creation, are typically called "studio monitors."

That being said, the M50s are one of the best value headphones at ~$100.

But are they better than the HD 598? Cause for me they are around the same price since I live in Spain, so I'm guessing they are not so good value then.

Basically, European brands are usually better value for me, so if I buy American they have to be really worth it, hehe.
