Brand new computer build from scratch. Need sugestions

Thread Starter
Hi

I want to build a brand-new machine with a budget of $1200 (+/- $200).

I want to be able to launch any windows app (like Firefox) as fast as possible (closer to instantaneous ), run current games, and to be able to use at least 2 monitors at least at 1920x1080 resolution.

I was thinking of:
1. Intel i7-950 or i7-870 - $400
2. Leadtek nVidia GeForce GTX 480, 1536MB, DDR5, 384bit, HDMI, PCI-E - $460
3. Asus SABERTOOTH-X58, socket 1366 - $250
4. 6GB RAM Corsair @1333 Triple Channel
5. Corsair F60 SSD - $150
6. Western Digital 1TB, 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA3 - $100
7. Thermaltake V3, ATX Mid Tower - $100
8. Sirtec 850W, ATX 2.3 - $200

Anything can be changed. Any sugestions greatly appreciated.
I went over the budget so any sugestions will be seriously considered.

(I also posted an AMD&ATI config here: http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...l#post11840916 in case you might have any suggestions)

Thanks.

1. Get the 950 or wait a couple weeks and see what Sandy Bridge brings to the table.
2. Consider the 580 for only $40 more, maybe even the same price if you can find it. Runs cooler and consumes less power. And it's better. Also, I don't know anything about Leadtek, but consider a more reputable manufacturer. EVGA, ASUS, Gigabyte, etc. They're all reference designs, so no difference performance-wise. But customer service and warranties are where it's at .
3. Fine mobo, but again I would wait until Sandy.
4. Get 1600MHz RAM with tight timings. You won't notice a speed difference between 1333 and 1600; however, it will make life a little easier hen you overclock.
5. Consider one of these three SSDs instead: Crucial C300, Intel X25, OCZ Vertex 2. This is especially important if you're concerned about things starting up Firefox as this will be the most important factor in that.
6. Good drive. Caviar Blacks are where it's at.
7. Not a fan of the tower, but that's more of a preference.
8. A bit overkill on the PSU. You can find a higher quality (and lower wattage) PSU for probably the same price.

1. Where is it exactly that you are going to spend $400 on a i7 950, thats way too much.

2. Get a gtx 570, it performs the same as the 480, for $350, runs cooler. Better gpu. Or like said above get the 580.

3.Your ssd is fine its the exact same thing as a vertex 2.

4. Intel is releasing new processors in about a week, they look really nice I would wait until then to check them out.

@Plex Thanks for the suggetions. I'll wait for Sandy Bridge, even if only to lower the cost of exiting procs.
The Asus/Gigabyte cards are about $100 more At least here.

@lightsout That's the current price here, unfortunately. I will wait a couple of weeks for the holiday fever to to pass and lower the price.

+1. There really isn't any reason to go with the GTX 480 anymore for a new build. Either go GTX 570 (cheaper at same performance) or GTX 580.

Hello.
First thing's first: I wish you all a very happy new year!

Now, back to business:
I'm now inclined towards gtx570 as its almost the same prince as 480 even if it's not more powerfull, because it runs cooler as lightsout pointed out. Thanks for that.
I'll just have to pick one between Asus nVidia GeForce GTX580 and Gigabyte GeForce GTX 570 GV-N570D5-13I-B (or others maybe? )

The proc. will probably be a i7-950 unless sandy bridge really impresses me (lol)
That said, I have some problems with choosing a MOBO.
First of all, I want that SSD (either the corsair F60 or OCZ's vertex2 which indeed are basically the same, but OCZ is a bit faster and corsair is a bit cheaper).
I will also add that WD HDD I wrote. This means that SSD should play nice with HDD.
I was inclined towards GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R for a moment. It seem like a Godsent, but I saw on a forum that it has a big issue: "the GA-X58A-UD3R (rev 1 or 2) have a known, unrepairable issue when combined with SSD + HDD {RAID or multiple}"
This made me return to my previous choice, the Sabertooth (name's kinda cool). Still, the same guy that wrote about the issue with Gigabyte, recommended one of these: ASUS P6X58D-E / EVGA X58 SLI3 | 131-GT-E767-TR
At this point I'm kinda lost. Do you have any suggestions. Not just among these mobos. Any that you might think are better for what I want.

I'll leave the case and power supply for later

Thanks again for your help.
