New 760... Burrning up after seconds of prime

Thread Starter
I ran out of money after I bought other parts, and the stock cooler does its job if you don't OC. So I put it on with some AS5, plugged everything in, turned it on. Tried to play games, forgot I had to reactivate them all, raged, slept, ran p95... for 10 seconds before it got to 80C and appeared to still be climbing a few degrees every second.

Thought I might have ****ed up, reseated with new AS5 and everything, temps still high, reseated AGAIN 3 times using different methods until my AS5 ran out. I think the 25c idle temp is pretty good, but that's just speedstep.

It doesn't change the fact that it goes to dangerous temps when it shouldn't. I'm not sure because I've always used aftermarket fans, but I thought the stock fans can at least handle a non-overclocked i5 760. Tell me that I'm right and I'm doing something wrong or there's something wrong with my CPU please .

I just realized I can't undervolt either, ******* MSI, I'm never buying another one of their boards again. I can change the LOCKED multi, and.. well, nothing else in the BIOS.

Completely unrelated but; why is the 3rd core hottest (at least in the 760s, don't know about other core iXs)? Does windows automatically put all single threaded apps on that core or something?

Had the same problem with my i7 860 when I was waiting for my noctua, it just wouldn't keep the temps down when running Prime95 no matter what method or paste I used. So I ended up just putting a fan with high CFM blowing right onto it and another fan to draw the heat away from it until I got my real CPU cooler.

As far as I know, the stock cooler can handle the heat .. as long as you don't try to run P95 or other really hot programs.

^ Alright, I need to make money fast, this is pissing me off not being able to OC and test it >.<
What's the best 1156 cooler for $50 or less? I didn't pay attention because I thought the cooler would be a little better than it apparently is.

Yeah, you should NEVER run p95 or IBT with the stock cooler, it cant handle it. Thats like running those programs on a laptop, just not smart.

^ I did p95 on my laptop all the time before I dropped it. It always crashed it even though the temps didn't get too high

NOW RECOMMEND A COOLER FOR $50 OR LESS

Welcome to OCN!

I think your problem has nothing to do with the cooler as my brothers pc also has this problem of having extreme temps like 65+ at idle and it has nothing to do with the cooler. He used an aftermarket on and then I changed it to the stock one and the problem remained. But in my case, the problems only started after a year or two when having the pc. To me it seems like the CPU has a problem or something.

Just my input
