Not passing prime blend

Hey guys - As you can see I'm new here. You guys have nice community, with great participation. That's why I joined.

I just put together an X58 build(found a 940 NIB for cheaper than I could find a 920, 930, or a 950). Of course there's a reason it was cheaper: it's the stepping that no one wants and SB is here.

Anyway, in my pursuit of a mild overclock, I have found myself unable to pass the prime95 blend test. I can pass the small FFT's.

I am at:
153 x 23 yeilding 3517 MHz in CPUz
DDR - 1530 MHz 10-10-10-27 1N

this RAM is CHEAP stuff, and may be my problem, http://www.mushkin.com/Memory/Blackline/998969.aspx

NB or uncore @ 3058
QPI link @ 2753(18X)

I haven't pushed passed the vid since I'm passing small fft's

vid = 1.264v (in cpuid)
1.88 PLL
1.2 IOH and ICH
1.65 dram
1.35 QPI

LLC on
Spread spectrum's off

I made it a few hours on blend before 1 of the 8 threads got an error.

I then put in chad's 800mv, 300 ps.

I then made it well into the night, and woke up to 124 BSOD.

I then tried 1.375 volts and got a quick(<30 min) 124 BSOD.

I then lowered QPI = 1.325 and got for another quick BSOD - IRQ not less or equal with long number letter strings at the bottom.

When I first put this thing together it wouldn't even begin to pass memtest with the cpu and ram at stock, and I asked mushkin. One of there guys(i assume) on their forum said push QPIv to 1.325 - 1.375. That seems high to run at stock settings, but it made it so I could run memtest for an hour w/o failing. I have not yet let memtest run completely through(as you know, it is time consuming).

What should my next step be?

PS temps are low 60's @ load, low 30's idle.

Thanks!

I would start by trying to test the same setup but with only 6GB.

It's a 12GB kit, 3 x 4GB. Thank you thank you for the reply, please keep throwing me ideas.

I'm now trying to find a min QPIv that passes memtest @ stock speeds on the cpu and RAM. BTW I made a pass and a half @ QPI = 1.325v with no errors. I then dropped it to 1.3 and made it 20% with no errors, restarted and am trying 1.275. I'm going to keep dropping it until it errors quickly then raise it a bit and see if it can make it through an entire pass.

Crap memtest is sloooow.

Plex, what multi are you using, what's your QPIv, and what speed are you running your RAM @?

Thanks!

Run everything at stock first. Or at least run small FFTs and large FFTs first.

Everthing stock but QPIv = 1.225 fails memtest with a quickness. I'm running it again @ 1.2375 now.

Quit running memtest and all that garbage. First you need to make sure everything is good at STOCK. If you fail blend or memtest at stock then you know you have a bad stick somewhere. But first you need to make sure your CPU isn't an issue. Its unlikely but you need to start with it first.

I have everything stock, but QPI voltage. BIOS says QPIv default is 1.2 v, but memory WON'T run at that and 1.65 vdimm. Should memory run @ 1.2 QPIv?

Memtest passed w/t everything stock, but with QPIv set to 1.250 v.

I'm now dropping it from the 2:12 divider to the 2:10 divider. This'll be ddr 1333, of course. I figure I should make sure that divider works @ default cpu speeds since it'll be the one I start with when I up bclk.

Edit: looked good with 2:10.

Upped bclk to 143, no errors in prime95 for 1 hour. Upped bclk to 153, linx bsod'd quickly. Now running prime at 148 bclk.

I must say, my e8500/p5q deluxe was a bit easier to overclock. This setup seems to be as finicky as my athlon x2/abit 570 sli setup was.

I ran prime through the night @ 22 * 160, but with ram divider @ 2:8 giving me 1280 mhz. This passed. I BDOD'd when I tried 164 bclk. cpu is @ 1.288v(1.3 in bios) and QPIv is @ 1.25v(in bios).

I am also stable at stock settings with the ram divider @ 2:12 giving me 1600 mhz.

I, however, am not stable @ 22 * 160 with the 2:10 divider which would get me back up to ddr-1600 mhz.

Any ideas?
