Which gaming laptop?

My buddy is looking to buy a nice laptop and has been debating between the two shown below. He'll be going to Israel for 6 months with work and is getting rid of his lame macbook pro (yes, I brought him back from the dark side ) and replacing it with this
ASUS
customized G53 built on xotic
Toshiba
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834214053
Newegg Compare link...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-220-877-02%23

The difference trade offs between the two being mainly:
ASUS - warrenty, 1yr accidental, 2 yr limited
TOSHIBA - SSD and 1080p

Which would you guys suggest? Other model/brand suggestions welcome.

Also, are there any set in stone release dates for the SB mobile lappys? He leaves the 14th or 17th of Jan, so I'm thinking that might be cutting it to close.

EDIT: Always felt like alienware was overpriced, but this looks decent too

EDIT2: Looks like either getting the customized G53 or waiting for SB, opinions?

hmm good to know. you think a 5870M would be a better choice?
Yes the 5870m would be for gaming power.

Rough idea: 5870m = desktop 5770
GTX460m = GTS450 desktop

Of course the laptop ones will be much slower.

The G53 you are looking at is the 3D model (the reason it is only 720p)
Save money get more

Alienware anything are a waste of money, unless you like to pay big $s for shiny lights and mediocre cooling.

Thosiba Quismos have worse cooling than alienware.

Over all I would recommend getting a Sager to get the most quality and performance out of your dollar, my second recommendation would be the Asus unit. It's cooling is fantastic, as is their driver support, your temps will not be the limiting factor in OCing the gpu and you should be able to push it past a GTS 450.

Second this. Avoid the 3D gimmick like the plague. However, at that res you would get better performance for gaming but it's a person choice honestly there.

Excellent link, I think he's going to go with that and customize in an SSD/HDD setup for around the $1800/1900 mark. Have any idea how far they get with the overclock option they have? I know lappys are notorious for not handling OC's well lol.

I guess the only question I have left is if anyone thinks its REALLY worth it to wait for the SB lappys to get released, as he will be in Israel by then and have to get it shipped to him. (From our house to ship to him for a 12lb lappy is ~$270 lol)

Toshiba, if you have seen any of my posts regarding ASUS, I dislike it entirely, 3D is a gimmick and 720 on that screen is terrible imo.

To be honest a wait mentality would be good. You may end up going longer without but odds are that by then these G50 and 70s will be replaced and that means you can then snag them at pretty step discounts refurbed ect.

If you need one now the G53s are good but the ones with the HD5870m are better performance.

I don't know how Limes' luck or experience has been so bad with Asus but flukes happen. Considering that Toshibas and me have a restraining order after the last one I typed on burnt a mark onto the desk it was on and my sophomore year we had to get a friends fixed thrice(never had to argue so much for RMAs). Everyone has bad experiences so bear that in mind. Even though the two Asus machines I had did far better than I hoped (netbook still with me) when you get to the scale of production these manufacturers work at there will always be screwy designs and/or individual units. But as of right now I have not heard many bad things about the new G50s and very few about the new G70s. And again, the people that often have the most problems with any machine are the ones with the least knowledge about it so I think you should be good since you know more than them.
