Help Choosing a Graphics Card

Thread Starter
I am building a computer the first time based on Sandy Bridge.

I have been researching, but I am not sure which card would be right for me.

Right now I have a HP 2007w monitor, but I will be upgrading to a Dell u2311h next time they have a sale. I would prefer to go with an ATI based card because of Displayport. I plan on keeping this build for 3 years or more, so if it is worth it to spend more I will.

I am looking to spend around $225 or less. I do not want the card to run too hot or loud. I will be using an Antec 550w psu, so any card which will run on it would be good.

The main game I am planning to play is Dragon Age Origins/2. I am also considering The Old Republic, but requirements are not out yet. I have also seen that Elder Scrolls 5 will be coming out. I played Morrowind on Xbox and Oblivion on 360, but if I get a good card I will get it for the computer.

Right now I have seen:

Gigabyte HD6850 for $175 http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?...ess-Video-Card

Asus HD6850 for $185 http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?...ess-Video-Card

These are the 6870's I am considering, but I am not sure which designs are best/differences are

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...^14-102-909-TS

I will most likely be purchasing from SuperBiiz/Amazon.

I have also seen the 5850 and GTX460 mentioned, but have not looked into them too much. I know the gtx470 is in my price range, but I have heard it runs to hot/loud and requires more power.

The GTX 560 will be coming out in January, but I am guessing that it will be over my budget.

2 460's in SLI are a really great combination. I just purchased a 470 so I can let you know first hand how it works out when I get back home to my apartment (at my parents for the holidays).

Your PSU would handle a 470 just fine.
But if you prefer ATI, then 6870 is your best bet in that price range, and just get the cheapest one.

i would go with the HD6870 made by sapphire. Also Sli/ cossfire isnt the greatest idea as you will always have less problems with A single GPU setup.

Thanks for the feedback. I am not planning on running crossfire/sli at any time.

Then a 460 should not be in you consideration. 470 would be the NVIDIA option if you wanted to go that way.

After some more reading I am mainly considering the 6870 by Asus, Gigabyte, and Sapphire with the non-reference coolers. The reference coolers seemed to get a little hot. Now I just need to wait for the right sale.

Here is the link shown the perfomance among 6870, latest GPUs (Included 6870 CF in case you upgrade in near future). The max 6870 is around 150w. The new tp-550 can pull 45a/540w on 12v so it should be fine if your rig is a typical dual/quad chip rig.
