Performance difference between 8x and 16x speed.

Thread Starter
So I have a 470 and I just found out that it's running at 8x speed but is plugged at PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot. The question is there a large performance gap between a card running at speeds 8x/16x?

Probably will see about a 4fps - 6fps difference between 8x and 16x speeds.
Theres virtually no difference at all. Something like a 1% difference...

Here's a link comparing two high bandwidth cards in SLi x8/x8 v. x16/16 and the difference is trivial.

No difference. I tried both for my GTX 470 and ended up with x8 for the better cooling space

There was an article a while back doing the comparisons with x8 & x16, I think it was on Tom's Hardware and the differences were negligible. In some cases I even think the lower multiplier beat out x16. I'll go find the article.

Edit: Couldn't find it but Unauf found one that explains it.

That's for the 480 but basically there is barely a difference at all. Most games don't even see a 1fps difference.

2-3% difference at most, I'd say.

With a 470, no difference at all. Maybe the tiniest of differences (not worth mentioning really), with a 5970/580.
It's very minimal, from what I've seen it was ~5-7FPS at the most.
