Overclocking my Q6600

Thread Starter
Well, at the moment i'm running my Q6600 at 3.2GHz at 400MHz x8 Multiplier.. I was wondering if this really makes a difference, or should I try and go for a higher overclock? My motherboard's max rated FSB is 1600MHz..
Any extra info needed; http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1566920
Basically my question is: am I taking full advantage of my rig or should I try to step up the overclock?

I'm not really familiar with that board, so I don't have any specific suggestions for settings...although it looks like you're at your board's max FSB. Your vcore @3.2ghz is pretty good, I think. What stress tests have you used?

3.2ghz isn't bad for the most recent batches of q6600s. You should definitely see noticeably improved performance in games and other apps. Someone more familiar with your board may have some suggestions for raising clock speed, but I wouldn't be disappointed with what you've achieved, if I were you.

what did you put the vcore at? Have you done stablility tests?

Thank you for your addition. I'm not disappointed actually, I was just wondering. My Vcore is actually 1.3V, CPU-Z isn't reading it properly for some reason.. I ran prime95, Intel Burn Test and LinX for stress tests and everything seems stable..

How are your temps now? I can take mine to 3.4 but the temps get higher than im comfortable with. I need a better HSF.

My temps are pretty good I guess.. They idle at 31-35 C and on load 49-52 C..

What are you doing with your rig btw? If its for gaming I would recommend a new GPU. But yeah, your temps looks good, 3.4 - 3.6 looks possible.

I figured your vcore was set to 1.3 or so in BIOS. CPU-Z is correct; there's always a bit of "droop" between BIOS vcore setting and actual vcore. If you've gotten through those tests with that vcore @3.2ghz, and the temps you mentioned above, you've got a pretty good overclock.

Mine does 400x8 at stock voltage (1.225), try to get 400x9. Mine takes 1.4v to do it but your board should be fine with that.

I have an EP43-DS3 in my Media Center and that board reaches 1600FSB, but it's by O.C. (they say it on the box and the manual in smaller letters). Your model is right below this one, so it definitely the same.

The EP45-UD3LR does do 1600 without O.C., so it should have a higher breathing room.

Considering you are already overclocking the FSB, I'd say you've got a pretty good overclock on the CPU. Anyway, if you overclock to 3.4 or 3.6 and if you need to much additional voltage, you're probably not going to gain as much as the lifespan you will be taking away from the CPU. If you can do it with nice temps and little additional voltage, then yes, else, I would personally stay with it as you've managed to get it, and wait for Sandy Bridge which is right around the corner.

If you game, it's much better to invest in a graphics card. That 4650 is strictly entry-level. A good GTX460 will be well paired with the Q6600 at 3.2Ghz.
