New Year, New OS

Thread Starter
I decided to forgo the SSD and got a second monitor instead. Once that shows up (today or tomorrow), I will make sure it works and then it's ARCH time.

I just printed out the beginner wiki (53 pages!) and I'll be doing the install then.

I'm nervous and excited

My netbook sucks. My laptop is broken. I have another desktop but that's in another room. I could have borrowed a laptop from my dad but he didn't seem so keen to the idea. The AMD system I have here doesn't have internet access unless I ad-hoc through my sig rig which will be down lol.

Ah. I prefer hardlines for internet, and the default DHCP script in the arch setup handle net setup just fine for me.

Either way, good luck!

If I had the choice, I would go hard line. Unfortunately, the layout of my house won't let me do it unless I re-sheetrock some rooms. Feeding wires would be impossible without it.

Cheap trick, go through the air ducts.

On a side note, Arch really isn't all that hard to install. In fact I found it as easy as Debian net install. The base system is automatic, everything else is done with pacman and is just knowing package names. I guess you might have problems with certain hardware but Arch is supposed to be done with up to date kernels, which should give you most hardware support.

I have no air ducts My house was built in like 1930 lol. No AC. Radiator heat. The cable modem and router are on an inside wall on the first floor. The wall on the second floor does not line up with the router wall on the first floor. Once I re-do the sheetrock, I'm putting jacks for cable and ethernet in every room lol.

For a guy who uses Ubuntu, Arch is a huge step for me. It's peeling back another layer of understanding. I've been practicing on VMs and I think I got it down. The wireless will be the big one for me.
