For a guy who uses Ubuntu, Arch is a huge step for me. It's peeling back another layer of understanding. I've been practicing on VMs and I think I got it down. The wireless will be the big one for me.

Depends, if it has support in the new kernels it'll be exactly the same. IMO if I had the choice now, I would go with either Gentoo or back to Debian. Basically if I'm going to do the work in setting things up I might as well go with something that has real work. Or if I want package dependency there is nothing that I've seen that beats Debian.

As for that house problem, that sucks. I've herd of old house designs but most at least have some form of central heat and air ducts. =X That's hella lame. The only thing I could think of is going outside, which could easily be done, but is even more ghetto than air ducts! lol Where I live there is a huge percent of the housing that is done without proper cable and phone wiring, but they at least have promise. =P GL with that, it's going to be one hell of a job.

Gentoo is out. I'm not compiling for 6 hours lol.

I really liked Arch in the VM. GNOME wasn't as bloated as it is in Ubuntu.

Yeah I think Ubuntu has a lot of problems with both Gnome/KDE meta packages. Debian has a smaller footprint and Arch seems to have a small one too. I would say it's on par with Debian alone, about 200-250MB RAM footprint but it seems to take up a little less space. I think it handles dependencies a little better, or maybe it just installs less by default. So far it's allright but nothing I'd brag about. =P

Yeah, that 6hr compile time is crazy but I'd just set it up at night so it does the work in my sleep. I can always draw, play guitar, or something if I don't. =P

I have nothing against debian but I want to move away from aptitude too. I'm not going to say I took Ubuntu to the furthest extent that I could but I need to learn new things. I want to learn pacman and yaourt. I want to do more. I want that bleeding edge lightweight feel.

Just remember that most of the stuff in the beginner wiki is useless for all but the most OCD linux users.

You might want to cross reference my guide, because chances are you'll try and configure something that doesn't need configuring, and mess it up.

Either way, good luck!

they cut the hardline, Get out of there, its a trap!
sorry, I could't resist.
on a more serious note, that sounds like a lot of fun. tell us how the arch linux thing goes, since I am considering switching over to that.

Your gude has ALSA, I'd opt for OSS4. I personally have found it runs way smoother and Arch is a perfect system to set things up, no prior sound to blacklist. =) You could update your guide to do so (both), just a suggestion. =)

Subbed, Let us know how you get on. I'm tempted to clean up my windows install and partition, dual booting Ubuntu, arch or similar. I miss Linux.
