[VR-Zone] Rumour: AMD to revive "FX" branding with Bulldozer - Page 5

If the 8 core FX cpus are truely as fast or faster then the i7 extreme, then it would make more sense for AMD to release them at a much lower price then the Intel i7 extreme IMO.

Why...

Well, they have been selling current chips for well under the i7's and thanks to their gpu market, the company is still makinmg a profit - so if they sell the new 8 core FX for much less then the i7 extremes, they will steal more market share from intel, and intel will not be able to do much.

I honestly doubt Intel would be able to afford to cut thei i7 retail costs by as much as AMD can with their FX's - and if they did, it would mean less money for R&D and give AMD much better chance of catching up and passing them.

If AMD play their cards right they could quickly be back at #1 - but only if Zambezi 8 core's are as fast as the i7 extremes

I think if this true, the FX version will be released maybe 1-2Months late to predict performance.

If the "normal" version Bulldozer performs about as SB,then im sure FX will be released.

Why would they need to do that? Amd surely has samples of it's own cpu's and it can get some Sandy Bridges to compare them to, no need to wait for consumers to test them.

For me that means AMDs internal testing shows BD kicking some butt which is awesome if it did bad against Sandy Bridge they would not release it me thinks

I think your starting to hit along my train of thought. Back when AMD had expensive chips they had a much bigger market share then they do now at least in the high end desktop market. I don't think they have enough of that back to release a 1k cpu again. They need to make up ground it seems as though there doing well in the mobile market but they have a ways to go i think. Just my opinion not facts.

To me it would simply not make sense (regardless of past FX price points) for AMD to suddenly jump into the $1000 price range when their hexacores are at or below the $300 price point.
And as far as that goes, Intel charging $1000 for their i7's to me is akin to raping it's customers/fanbase for no good reason, just because they can. It's not because the processors really perform that much better, let's be honest.

Even with added features or larger cache a sensible price point would be in the $500-$800 range and would allow AMD to gain market share and win back many customers who may have jumped ship years ago.

With that said however, if AMD decides to reserect the whole line of FX processors and can level in some upper mid-range models they might be able to justify a close to $1000 price, though I think it would be difficult right now. Personally, I wouldn't participate in the feeding frenzy though until the smoke is cleared and maybe not even then unless I saw some serious and significant results.

AMD has ton's of R&D to pay for and a new process at GLOFO that Im sure isn't cheaper than current 45nm.

Intel has it's own fab that's been on 32nm for awhile and Im pretty sure they've put a large dent in getting that going by now with all the 32nm Gulftowns they've been selling for $1000. They will fight if needed be Intel's cash strapped not AMD and they can afford whatever they like.

AMD's never been number 1 in cpu sale's even when P4/D's blew chunks, large account's will continue to buy Intel how many school's, offices, business's you see with AMD on their Compaq, Dell, Gateway etc.

Mainstream is where the sales are at and AMD has Llano to handle that.
BD performing better than Intel's offerings will just get more people talking about the brand in enthusiast circle's which get's the name out there more.
You have to remember common people know who Intel is and will buy them just because of that.

Why do people assume AMD will jack up the price? AMD's prices have always been competing with intel. Maybe if they beat the i7 extreme... but remember that AMD had better chips for price back in '06. Remember the Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Editions? AMD's FX-57 was cheaper.... and better.
