Should i upgrade?

Thread Starter
I've currently got a Core 2 Duo E6700 running at it's stock 2.66Ghz. I haven't bothered to overclock, but I will, i've heard they overclock relatively well.

I was wondering if it's worth upgrading though, as it's quite an old CPU nowadays. My Motherboard is a P5n32-e sli plus. It's compatible with a few quite modern cpus, such as the E8500, E8600 and some quads, like the Q6600 and Q6700.

you use it mostly for gaming? if so and upgrade might be in order. even a q6600 should bring you promising results.

if it were me, id wait and save my money to build a new system. but if you dont have the money to build a whole new system you could upgrade to a quad and maybe upgrade the video card.

and remember there is always 1 free performance upgrade, and thats to overclock the hell out of that chip. lol

Heck yes upgrade.I would do some checking to see if any other quads will work in your mobo.If not start looking around for a better mobo and a e8400 or q9x50 series quad.Better memory and a gpu.If you shop you can get this upgrade for not too much money.

I quite like the core 2 chips, I would give it a go at overclocking before upgrading.

A lot of games only run in 2 threads of data, so higher clock speeds > more cores in my opinion.

That will heavily depend on your cooling however. Then again, dual core shouldn't produce that much heat, you'll probably need to worry more about your motherboard chipset temps.

If you were going to go for an upgrade I would go whole hog and get a new system. In fact, it's probably worth waiting and saving for sandy bridge considering that's imminent and looking to be fairly reasonably priced.
