4870 not workin after blast of compressed air

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I dd a computer cleaning recently on another computer. The dust was real bad so i used an air compressor to blast a lot of dust out of the case. I thought i was fairly gentle keeping the nozzle at no close than a foot and a half or so.

So heres the symptoms. Turn the computer on

CPU fan spins.
PSU fan spins.
Hard Drive turns on.
Video card fan does not spin
No video output to monitor. but there is 3 red LEDs that turn on near the power port.

I'm thinking that i might have blew some dust that settled somewhere in the PSU or behind the motherboard. I suppose it is possible in my airblast i got a fan spinning to fast that could have generated some counter voltage back into the PSU.

I would just like some feedback or some ideas before i start trying to diagnose anything.

I had this. Tried all of the above, but it turned out to be the video card fan connector had come off.

thats for the suggestion but it didnt work, for testing purposes i unplugged both power cables from the PSU to the 4870 and started up the pc. same symptoms obviously but all the same LEDs are lit. I'm thinking it might be a PSU problem.

Can i check with a mutimeter the RAIL voltates of the cords goin to the Video Card safely? to ensure that there is voltage actually getting to the video card? or perhaps find an adapter that hooks up 2 molex into a 6 pin and try a different rail to power the Video card

You can test the voltages across the plug pins. red 5v. yellow 12v. test against black. To make sure your multimeter is OK and as a ref, test against a known good plug. The voltages should be the same for red and yellow on any plug.

This is all assuming that you have done a really good visual check. Take the cover off the card and check all is connected, plus look everywhere inside the case for anything amiss. People have spent hours crying and sweating over a fallen off connector
