The danger

Lapping itself won't do any damage as long as you don't go too far. Also it will void your warranty so you should know that in advance.

I have lapped a cpu before, it wasn't that concave but I got 3c from it.
Well i have checked the thickness of an AMD heatspreader and they are pretty damn thick.
you would have to take off close to 1/8th of an inch of material before contacting the core.
Unless you've got really bad nerves, no patience, and an not so flat surface there really is no danger to lapping.

Lapping is a machining technique in which an abrasive material used for cutting and polishing the object. Lapping can be used both to obtain a flat surface and a smoother surface, but not necessarily both at the same time.
Like the other guy said, you only get about 3c out of it.

^^ don't bother, just get some more fans for your Hyper 212, or buy a D14 and get a 15C difference
