Poll Results: Should i sell my 480 and get 2 6850s instead?

This is a multiple choice poll
  • 27% of voters (16)
Yes, if you can't tolerate the noise.
  • 72% of voters (42)
No, multi gpu setups suck. Stick with your current card.

Honestly, I don't know of anything out right now that would require even near the performance of CFX 6850's so there's no need for a third and with every additional card, you get possible additional complications. By the time CFX 6850's become obsolete, I'm sure that there will be newer, better options out there instead of buying another 6850. CFX 6850's will destroy a single 570 for less and even outperform a 580 which costs over $500. In this case, I think the best bet, if you're going for a swap with great performance at a similar cost, you really can't beat the 6850's. They are about as cool and quiet as a high end card can be.

My view:

1. Losing $120 (in selling your GTX480) is less economical than investing in an aftermarket cooler.

I would suggest Gelid Icy Vision which takes a design philosophy of supporting future cards by releasing necessary upgrade/mounting kits. This prolongs its usefulness and makes economical sense.

It is selling at US$55 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...20icy%20vision)

2. As noise is your main reason, then using HD6850 CF might not yield a much silent result, especially if you overclock the 2 cards. A pair of non-overclocked HD6850s under full load is already coming close to a single GTX480 (with stock cooling).

Time to buy a watercooling setup then.

Damn, i'm just too used to onboard gpus, lol. The whiiissshhhhhiiing noise is so annoying. I wish it was more like a huming sound.

Watercooling a GPU is much more expensive than using an aftermarket air cooler offered by Gelid or Zalman or Artic Cooling. And the waterblock is usually not transferable to the next card.

Economically speaking, it is less desirable, IMHO.

and having 2 dual slot cards will take up four, so what's you point.......unless he wants to go tri-sli then he is ok.......the cooler i listed on that card will drop an average of 20C load temps AND fans @ 100% will be quieter than stock 480's @ 50

Evga will acept that as long as you install it correctly and there is no physical damage done to the card. The accelero (atleast for me) was $85. I got it from performance-pcs. The card is now silent. I don't hear a thing. Even at 100% I still don't hear a thing. It's actualy the best $85 I've ever spent. The tempature drop was great too. My load dropped by 30c and my idle dropped by 20c. If you wanted to put it under water, it would run you a lot more unless you already have a water cooling loop. I block from ek for the 480 is $110. There is a guy on OCN though thats selling his for $65. Might want to check that . Good luck!

But if you are interested in water cooling now is the best time, a gpu block may not transfer but the rest of your parts will and the best air coolers can't touch water. Now that I've had a taste it's goodbye Megahalem hello water block
